I'm unable to comment on this. I have the GI Bill and am waiting to hear how much of tuition is covered. But I doubt I'll need financial aid on top of that.

Did anyone who got in get this email about financial aid (no longer offering need based but instead offering some kind of scholarship)? It is essentially incomprehensible what it ACTUALLY means. What would be the practical difference between what they were going to offer (need based) and this? Is this just a way for them to offer you less? Any thoughts?

I took it to mean they might give money, but I have no idea what the hell this merit/need scholarship chimera they talk about actually is. The requirement to put your parents' income unless you're 30 is really bizarre too.

Ha yeah I dunno what in heavens they are talking about. Also remember that there are two ways to demonstrate independence, one is to just be 30 or over, and the other is to give them 5 years of tax forms indicating independence throughout that time.

Does anyone have any input on what kind of aid transfer students have received historically? I'm an out of state student and it's gonna cost me $250 to order exact copies of my past five tax returns and another two weeks for them to arrive by snail mail.

I transferred 2 years ago to Berkeley (just graduated). I received aid (20-25k) both years I was at Berkeley. BUT, I didn't hear of any other transfers getting money and I know a lot of them for sure didn't.

Thanks for stopping by. Would you mind sharing your experience with transferring to B? Was it a good decision for you?

It was literally the best decision I've ever made and that's been the experience of all the transfers I know. The opportunities at a t14 are just a world of difference. I'm public interest focused and will be doing a fellowship next year, but almost all of my transfer friends who wanted big law got it. One didn't but is doing the DOJ honors program post grad, and another who struck out at OCI mass mailed and is going to a firm he loves. The environment is great, the alternative grading system takes a lot of stress off and people are super welcoming to transfers. By my third year a lot of people didn't even know I was a transfer. The only thing I wished I would have done was take a seminar or two my first semester, developed some good letters of rec for clerkships and applied for those. I'm happy to answer any other questions.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Thanks for the insight. Any recommendations on housing?

Don't live right by school. I lived there and it was right by all the frats and it was miserable. I moved to Oakland after that and it was a hundred times better, cheaper, quieter etc. I also had friends who lived by downtown Berkeley and the northside of campus and both those sounded better. I actually found my roommate through TLS.

Thanks for the advice! So you wouldn't recommend applying for the graduate housing? The location is pretty great in that it's literally a block from school.

If you enjoy sleep I wouldn't. It was awesome being so close to school but didn't make it worth it when frats were partying literally all night long. That area has frats on all side.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
