3.5 at Hastings ---> T14? Forum

A in Property, A in Torts, and unfortunately a B- in Civ Pro which hurt drastically. What are my chances of transferring to a T14?

If you can kill 2nd semester, you can bring your overall GPA up to top 10% and have a strong shot at T14. Have you talked to your Civ Pro professor about why you got a B-? Learning what makes the difference between an A and a B- will go a long way towards avoiding another B-.

Also try to figure out how your GPA will transfer. A 3.5 at Hastings may = top 10% at some schools and 30% at others (just like our curve changes depending on the year.)

GPA is irrelevant, what matters is your approximate class rank. Schools above Hastings are either familiar with Hastings' grading curve or able to contact someone who is. Adcomms won't compare a 1L "3.5" to another "3.5", they'll compare you based on where that puts you in your class.

Your GPA also doesn't transfer, if that's what kapital was saying. You'll start clean without a GPA or credits at your new school, just a requirement to take two years of upper-level courses. Your GPA at the new school will be based entirely on the classes you take there. Nearly all schools do it this way, I have yet to hear of an exception.

Are you sure about the GPA transferring regarding class rank? There seems to be multiple threads about people transferring and their class rank moving slightly up or down depending on where they go. People with a "B" curve seems especially hard hit when they transfer into a "B+" curve school. This is especially important for OCI because class rank is the critical factor.

If I'm wrong please tell me -- I really want to know. Also, I'm talking about schools that maintain a standard GPA scale. I'm excluding schools like Berkeley, Chicago, and Harvard because I don't know enough about their grading scale to begin with.

I wasn't implying GPA stays. I was relating it to class rank. After OCI grades become a lot less important and I don't really care about honorary titles (ex: Magna cum laude.)

For OCI purposes, you will be evaluated based on how you performed during your 1L at your old school. your resume will state that you are a transfer and will have your old school's gpa/rank. because of this, It may seem like transfers are at a disadvantage during OCI, but I've seen several posts on this forum of T3 -> T1 transfers getting SA's.

P.S. I'm in the same place. Hopefully, GULC will be friendly to transfers.

LOL no I think some people actually like it there. I hear GULC typically are, but who knows the numbers vary from year to year.

I love it at Hastings. I don't really want to transfer, I just feel like I should transfer for better job prospects.

If you really love it at Hastings, only apply to Berkeley/Stanford and only consider transferring to one of those schools. Don't feel like you should transfer because you "have to" -- especially if you want to work in SF. And I say this as someone who actually transferred and felt the same way that you did last year.

Sounds about right. If you're high enough in the class to be able to transfer to a T-14 then you're probably in decent enough shape to work for a firm anyway. But Stanford and Berkeley are right around the corner(s)... though Stanford is much harder to transfer to than Berkeley.

wow...that's insane. you killed property and torts, but that b- is such a backbreaker. how did that happen? that's still a great first semester.

I know I was absolutely devastated lol & I thought I did decent...I went to the prof it was the organization of my exam he said .. go figure!

It was also sad that the Property Prof told me I would've gotten a A+ if I would have listed 2 more issues...that def would of helped with the B-
