Maybe UIUC can take all the money they're making off transfer hopefuls and bribe some more firms to come to OCI.

1 time fucking you over for 250 sucks, fucking you for 250 each time is unacceptable.
You need one for every school. It's $250 for the first two, $50 for each school after that.
Re-fucking-diculous.

Or ask their sister school UIC to use their fucking facilities and host an OCI in Chicago.

What a bunch of scumbags.

This needs to be on UIUC's TLS profile and ATL.

And this is the quote you include in the email, which they will include in the post.

Lol if that is true that's ridiculous. In TLS's exclusive profile on UIUC, the Dean brags / the profile states:

"On the rare occasion, a student will transfer out of UIUC. Illinois makes an effort to keep such students, up to and including an increase in that student’s scholarship. 'Last year, we had [only] 4 students transfer out. 3 of them made the right decision.” Of those four, students went to Georgetown, Northwestern, NYU and Boalt (Berkeley). “The one that went to Georgetown did the early thing. I don't think anyone in her section really knew her. Boalt was from Cali and really missed it. Northwestern had a deal where he only needed a 3.0 to get in. NYU's husband worked in NYC and she missed him.' In most cases, transferring out of UIUC seems to be a tough and very personal decision."

LOLOL yeah, tough decision cuz $250.00 is a ton of money.

Also, I'm pretty sure those letters of good standing are free at most T4's, just to put it into perspective.

What exactly is the implication here? No one "in her section really knew her."

So what?

Everyone knows this, and some posters have already alluded to it, so this is more of a personal exclamation than anything else:

That's totally fucked up and unacceptable. Yeah they don't want to lose transfers, but GTF over it just like every other law school. That this is happening at a real law school (not some T3/T4 profit-generating venture) means that there's a realistic chance of getting this changed.

TLS/ATL have the shaming capacity to force a change w/r/t this policy.

I'm actually curious to hear other horror stories about transferring. I've heard some schools delay releasing grades to try to disrupt transfer apps. Is this sort of shit common? Are there any schools that are notorious for this sort of stuff?

This is so different than the type of experience I received at my old school when I wanted to transfer. The Dean of my old school was actually pulling strings and contacting people to make the whole process as quick and smooth as possible for me. (He even contacted the Dean at my new school and explained why I wanted to transfer and asked if my decision could be made earlier than what's typical so I could start making plans either way.)

Wow. I'd like to see a list of the schools that do this. I wonder if this is only for transfers, or if they would do the same if you were, say, applying to an LLM program after graduation.

I was surprised to find that both letters of good standing and transcripts (with standard processing) were free at my school.

Transcripts and letters were free at my school, and they were sent out the day after class ranks were announced. Considering how much law school costs, I would be furious if they charged me for any of that stuff, or if they pulled anything to try and delay the process.

+1 Everything was free at my school.

Here's an interesting blog post Dean Z wrote about schools doing things like this.

Last LRW assignment was due Apr 2... final course grade didn't land on our transcripts until June 28th

Excellent but obvious anti-transfer strategy

Same. While stuff is free at my school, we didn't get final grades and rank until July 1.

Finals were done May 9, grades didn't come out til June 20, rank June 27.
Transcripts are $8.
Letters of good standing are three for free, then $25 for each additional. (But at least forms - like NYU's, CLS', etc. - don't count towards the letter quota.)

I had one bad experience (which admittedly I may have contributed to at least somewhat), though overall I didn't encounter a lot of resistance at my lower T1. It definitely seems like a really sensitive topic for some staff/faculty, though luckily I found that some people at the school were willing to be supportive and at least neutral on the topic.

I won't go into the bad experience, but I would say that it strikingly showed me that not all employees of the school will necessarily handle a request for support in the same way (regardless of the fact that my approach to the topic may have been flawed).

Dean Pless seems to be open and willing to answer questions on this forum..
Send this his way for an explanation/attempt at justification?

Also, +1 to ATL.

So for 4 letters you pay 250(2) + 50(2) = 600? Or 250 + 50(2) = 350?
