I posted this is my other thread too but this thread will probably be a better source for future transferees (transferors? I still don't understand how those work).

t4, top 5% (still waiting on official rank), CA school, applied first day app was available, in at Berkeley.

Withdrew from everywhere else yesterday. Good luck everyone!

I think your chances are poor with that GPA. I hope that you don't put it on your resume. Employers may assume it is bottom half of the class.

Haha...I have my fingers crossed, b/c I didn't apply anywhere else. Last year, my cycle was pretty humbling, so while I have good numbers, I know they're not determinative. Just want to get to Boston, but at both BU and BC I'd be making a lateral move and losing scholarship $

I hope your fiance has room for one more. While I can't say that you are definitely in, you have to be one of the most competitive applicants. Honestly, who could be a more qualified applicant besides the #1 students at the 20 or so schools ranked ahead of you? And, generally, these students are not likely to transfer but for a geographical issue like your own. Be sure to keep us updated. I'm crossing my fingers for you.

Outside of someone interested in academia or with hoopdreams of landing a SCOTUS clerkship, what would this hypothetical student have to gain? A #1 student at a T20 is almost definitely a lock for prestigious biglaw, is a competitive applicant for federal clerkships, is probably on Law Review, and is likely receiving $$ from the T20. So for the great majority of students in such a position transferring only brings prestige, more debt, no journal and a small shot at academia (and an even smaller (perhaps infinitesimal) shot at SCOTUS).

That being said, it's definitely happened before. The #1 at UCLA from a few years ago comes to mind. However, my point was that a #1 at a T20 is much less likely to transfer than a #1 at a T30-infinity.
