Did anyone apply to NYU in late june and get a status checker yet? I called them and they said they have all my materials, but I still have not received a status checker...

I got my status checker right after I applied on June 30, and well before all my materials were in.

Accepted at USD (San Diego) two/three weeks ago (can't remember the exact date). Lateral Xfer - Top ~40% at Midwest Tier 2.

I agree with the VA thing, UVA uses transfers to bump up their in-state percentage like no other. But I've known of several east coasters/southerners who have gotten into Boalt.

I have definitive proof of their west-coast bias. I was top 5% at Wisconsin, and my friend (also on TLS) was top 5% at Wisconsin as well. We both applied to Berkeley and I got in and he got rejected. Why? Hard to say exactly-- I had some more work experience but what I think really made the difference was that I was born, raised and graduated from high school in San Francisco. My friend had no CA connections whatsoever.

I was able to write a PS talking about my desire to return to the region my friends and family are in. He was not able to write such an essay.

Also, they ARE a public school, so perhaps somewhere in their charter they like to cater to California residents, or at least west coasters.

Recent data shows that the UC's have actually been admitting more out-of-state applicants, at least at the undergraduate level, presumably for tuition dollars.

If I had to hazard a guess - and this is only a guess - Berkeley wants to accept people who will succeed out of the school. For a lot of people looking to break into a market (CA), having ties seems to be key. Ergo, Berkeley is looking for people with ties to the area so that they'll succeed at OCI and on the job market in general.

Haven't heard from Texas Tech but received a phone call from SMU a few days ago. They said seat deposits are due on Thursday.
