Anyone get the official email yet? I still feel like its a mistake, hahahaha. Hell i thought it was a mistake when 1st semester grades came out. I am nuts.

Feeling the same way - did Dean Tom say when we get the email? The phone call is kind of a blur to me.

(This is my first post ever, but I feel like acceptance at Berkeley warrants finally posting. Got the phone call at 6:15 EST. Current LS = 50-60, Rank #1)

As of now, I am choosing between GULC and Berkeley, and havent heard back from Penn and NYU/CLS. This is a much more positive message than GULC's bit about employment prospects; how true is it?

Choose Berkeley! Aside from any bias I have, I would say that it is still very true. There were 500 law firms coming here during a good economy, and 300 this last year. The 300 firms attending is still a large number, as only about 2/3 of the students do OCI, so supply outpaces demand still in that aspect. Unfortunately how many offers those firms hand out is a different story, but getting interviews during OCI is not a problem.

I'd also be curious to hear if anyone has any good info on Berkeley's NYC BigLaw placement.

Berkeley dominates the bay area market, but it does VERY well in the NYC market as well. The thing is that very few people apply there and everyone wants to stay here. However, of my friends who are working in New York, they seemed to have great success (even in this economy) at getting jobs there. New York is still a very large market, and even easier to get a job there than the bay area (which everyone crowds into), according to one of my friends. Basically, my impression is that if you wanted to work in NYC, you had no problem this last year. In fact, some recommended applying to NYC as a backup if the bay area bids were too crowded.

Decided not to apply to Berkeley because I just couldn't up and move to the west coast on my family (my mother would be so sad), but grats to all you guys who got in. What a great school.

That sounds like an overwhelming vote of confidence for Berkeley employment prospects. Since I'd be transferring from an NYC law school, I like that it sounds like it would still be possible to get back to NY via Berkeley, in case I do want to return to the East Coast. And I don't think it would be wise to take GULC over Berkeley based on what I seem to be hearing about the two schools. I think the more difficult decision would be Penn/NYU/CLS vs Berkeley

Sure haha, there are lots of options, and some are opening up.

There are the two school-affiliated options (Ida Jackson and Manville). Ida Jackson is one block away from the law school, and a great location. Manville is farther down the hill, and a lot of Boalt students live at both locations. Oh, and I live at Ida Jackson by the way. If you are interested in living there, be sure to apply to take a full year lease, and talk to the woman in charge (in person), she is super nice and will help you out.

I-house is also right across from the law school, and several Boalt students live there as well. It is really close, but is more dorm style (not too many single rooms), very diverse, and also requires you to eat their food everyday (they put you on a meal plan).

Farther away, there are apartments all along the South side, which are within walking distance. One place I also considered was Cambridge apartments, which was a really good location by the food and between the gym and law school. If you are interested in the apartments in the area, craigslist is a good way to go. My feeling is that a good chunk of students live in various apartments south of Campus.

The north side of campus is a bit farther, but is much quieter. The south side is more hectic (protests every other week right?), but closer to the food and the gym, bus stops, BART, and well, closer to everything.

Aside from that, a good chunk of students live in the city, or wherever their family is. I have friends living in Richmond, Albany, Oakland, Orlinda, downtown SF, Southbay, etc.

Housing is tough, but there are still plenty of opportunities. A lot of the places do not have websites either, and are often referred to by word of mouth. If you get to visit, you can just walk around and call places up. There are for rent signs up in a lot of places that are not actually advertised online or on craigslist.

In fact, she made it sound like it was very unlikely that I would get a job from EIW. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to Berkeley. Arrow, your insight is very helpful. Thanks!

BTW, Does Berkeley fare just as well in LA, portland, or Seattle as it does in SF?
