But I did...
Do we really have to use a passport photo? I always manage to look like I'm 12 and/or stunned. Can't we just crop a nice picture of us that doesn't have a distracting background?
This. At least, I believe we can. Look at the Facebook (not facebook.com) on the GULC website to see what is acceptable. A few people used what appears to be their facebook.com profile picture.
You can view that? It tells me I am not a student or something.

I forgot my crazy password they made us create to get onto the website services. The one with all the capital letters and symbols and numbers and can't be a word.

I've never called. I didn't think anyone could see it, I asked a long time ago I think.

I like the new pic starrydecisus. Been watching the show. The first season is really long. I wasn't really expecting that.

Well on the GoCard website, http://www.law.georgetown.edu/gocard/faq.htm
it says "All photos must be passport type color photos with frontal view of just the head and shoulders on a solid white or blue background. Any photos inappropriate for use on the GOCard will not be processed."

Looks like it may not be so strictly enforced? Yay?

Yes, but under "Full Text Facebook Search," you can type in a name to see what kinds of photos people used.

Haha, I feel stupid now. Thanks for the tip. It looks like a lot of people took the picture there based on the backgrounds.

I just got an e-mail reminder about the picture.

If we email in our photo, is there anything we need to include in the body of the email? our student id number for example..

I still need to do my GoCard app. I don't print from my computer at home right now (new printer is still in the box so I can ship it easily) so I'll need to forward it to my job, but I keep forgetting to do that.

For the picture, I can just take one from my laptop and have one of the programs crop it to the right size.

I believe you only need to print and use the form if you are not submitting electronically. You can also join student advantage, and add money to your gocard once you get it, online.

From the form:

(This application only needs to be sent if you decide to send your photo by mail, add funds to your GOCard or request Student Advantage)

Oh. I was thinking about Student Advantage for some of the discounts (namely on Amtrak, and despite the fact I had SA for four years in undergrad and never used it... but it was a very different city so I figure I'll try again). So you're saying that I can join SA after I get my GOCard without using the form at all?

If all I need to do is take a picture an e-mail it to them, that's pretty awesome.

Nope, I sent something like:

"Please find attached the photo I wish to use for my GoCard, as per the instructions in the email I received this July. If possible, please acknowledge receipt of this email and photo.

Thank you,
js87"

They responded within a couple hours confirming it. And for the record, it was not a passport photo, but was a cropped headshot photo I had.

I did. (and you don't have to wait until after, I already did it) Love that Amtrak discount!

Besides the Amtrak discount, what other perks are there to the Student Advantage? Are you all doing the 3 year one?

Well I figured with Amtrak alone I would make it worth it. I go to NYC a lot. But I also love drugstore.com and already use it, so I will apply that one. I do order some stuff from target online sometimes...so I could use it there too. For me, that was enough. I don't imagine I will use it often or that I will use most of that stuff they list...but again, the few things I already do and can use it on made me decide to just do it for the 3 years. I don't imagine I will use it a lot.

The Amtrak discounts are pretty decent too, like 10 or 15% off. While it's generally much cheaper to get to NYC with something like BoltBus (especially if bought a bit in advance), there are other places in the area for which Amtrak is your best bet, especially if you don't have a car in DC (Pittsburgh, Charlottesville, Hampton Roads, Cumberland, Raleigh, etc.)

The Housing Office posted the Welcome Events Schedule:

WELCOME EVENTS

Saturday, August 21st: 7:30 pm- Moonlight Bus Tour of Washington, DC.

Sunday, August 22nd: 7:30 pm- Welcome Reception- Tower Green

8:00 pm- Luau '10

Monday, August 23rd: Noon- The Gewirz Great Race

6:00 pm- Washington Nationals Baseball vs Chicago Cubs

Tusday, August 24th: Noon- Neighborhood Tours

8:00 pm- Night out in DC

I imagine that the Luau is the pool party? To those Good Wife watchers, I'll be keeping my eye out for Will Gardner doing canon balls haha ;)

Also, I see that the Nationals game is listed for Monday night. I wonder if they are providing tickets? If they are, shall we reschedule the Rocket Bar event? Volsi and nowinGA are already going to the game that night anyway.

I wonder how long The Gewirz Great Race is? If that's done by 3 or so we might be able to just go to the bar before the game. Or of course we could go there from the game. Interestingly I'm likely also going to a Nats game the Saturday before classes start with one of my (rising) 1L friends that I'm good friends with.

that might actually be fun to meet up beforehand! Plus, we'd probably hit happy hour then for better deals, and we could go together to the game. I like that idea!

FYI, for anyone whose regular Metro station is Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring, or Takoma; or for anyone who uses those stations:
WMATA wrote:Track work will close Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont Metrorail stations
Metro will close five Red Line stations during the Labor Day Holiday weekend from 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3, to closing on Monday, Sept. 6, as the agency undertakes a major rehabilitation and rebuilding project to improve safety, comply with a recommendation made by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and maintain service reliability and a state of good repair. The Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont Metrorail stations will be closed during the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Normal service will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 5 a.m.
