Texas 2013
After meeting several of you at the UT@UT event or the ASD, I decided to create a thread for everyone who HAS DECIDED TO ATTEND the University of Texas at Austin School of Law for the class of 2013.
And to be honest I wanted a thread to meet and get to know my future classmates without hopeful candidates asking "what are my chances?" or "I applied 2 weeks ago -why haven't I heard?! What does this mean?!"
So please, feel free to ask questions about housing, Austin, classes, books, etc. Hopefully we will be able to get a current 1L to join and answer some questions as well. But please respect the intention of this thread and don't post until you have committed. Thanks, see you in the fall, and Hook 'em!

After some careful calculations, I decided it would be MUCH cheaper, and I think I would be miles happier at UT (um, tailgating? lol).

Re: Texas 2013
HaHa ya I saw that one but it was mainly full of "I hope I get in!" and "Can someone please tell me what the adcomms are thinking?" type posts. I wanted to avoid that and create a thread for future classmates to get to know each other and the city we will all call home for the next three (or more) years.f0bolous wrote:you're a year too late

I feel like its the first day of high school.
Hi, I'm McFlooter, you can call me Flooter. I have red hair, which is apparently my defining characteristic. I like football, a lot. I like hockey even more. I'm a tiny little girl from Dallas.

Can I still post here even if I haven't decided yet? What's that, I can? Sweet.smith8586 wrote:Any of you care to review the weekend?
Smith8586, the weekend was great. I say this with total honesty: I really felt lucky that Dean Ingram deemed me worthy of joining such a bright, ambitious and personable group of folks. I honestly had no idea what to expect from the school, the city or the people, but everything about the weekend made me feel comfortable about spending tons of money to go to UT. And just as you'd anticipate, all the TLSers added a fun vibe.
Some highlights: first, obviously, the Segway tour. This didn't occur to me until afterward, but was anyone else struck by the symbolism of all of us speeding around doing laps around the state capitol (which also happens to look like the national capitol)? Good times. Also on that first day, Stubbs barbecue gets a thumbs-up, as does the Austin Amber beer. As a matter of fact, that whole area of Sixth Street seemed like a tall frothy glass of win.
The second day was a fun-filled propaganda-fest. I'd expect nothing less from a bunch of attorneys trying to sell an expensive product to a savvy audience. But I still feel like I learned a lot and got a good sense of the resources available to help us find jobs and get practical experience. I was impressed by the seven "specialists" in the career services office and blown away by the number of clinical programs. The dean also seems to have a pretty good handle on the direction the law school is going and why it's still a good buy despite ITE, or even because of ITE. (Speaking of ITE, the general consensus of those in the know was that '010 and '011 are screwed, but we'll be aight. I'll believe it when I see it.)
When I got a chance to speak more individually with professors, at that awesome taco lunch, I was very impressed. They seemed to be genuinely excited about the school and genuinely interested in their potential students' goals. Usually I groan when I hear 22-year-olds talk about how much they want to save the world, but it was eye-opening to listen to a knowledgeable discussion between a fellow 0L and a professor about specific injustices immigrants face because of certain Texas laws. I'd be interested to hear what other people at the lunch have to say about the profs who infiltrated the tables (or any other profs you talked with during the weekend).
The mock class, of course, was a bunch of nervous people pretending they didn't know anything about the topic at hand, even though I got the sense that people had read a lot more deeply than they initially let on. The professor in my group, Anderson, seemed like a pretty chill guy, asking tough, probing questions and gently making people who spoke out uncomfortable. If that's the way he conducts class, I foresee a productive semester.
In the end, no mythical gunner medals were awarded. But I would nominate one of our number for most TLSeriffic question: Will UT, like Vandy, begin publishing the starting salaries of each individual graduate? (Career services dude had no idea what he was talking about.) Someone else will have to fill me in on the ice cream social, as I was in the process of paying an entire dollar to take the bus to the airport. Score one for the bus system.
It almost makes me sad that I have to give Emory a fair shake. Suffice it to say, because of this visit, I have no qualms about going to UT. (BTW, if anyone wants to influence my decision, the promise of catharsis-designed "Stubbs 20" T-shirts would do wonders.)
TL;DR version: ASD was fun times. Also informative.
(Edit: corrects classes that are screwed.)

This must be a misprint. I thought I was the only person in the state who likes hockey, me being a Michigan transplant.mcflooter06 wrote:I feel like its the first day of high school.

Stubbs 20!!!
(To be honest, it was 19 + the server) But yes! We definitely need to make shirts. Cash vs. Credit...
I had a great time at ASD. It was good to meet everyone and put together names and faces. (Now we just have to connect the names and faces to our TLS screen names!)
And I agree, the TLSerrific question was awesome! Kudos to you sir!
How about when the 2009 employment statistics were brought up? It was almost like deer in the headlights. Does anyone currently have access to that info? The link is there on the website, but it doesn't work for me.
Dean Sager was awesome! Seems like a guy you'd love to have a chat with over a coffee or a beer. I still chuckle when I think about us sitting right next to him.
I guess money budgeting and housing will be the next two things on most of our minds. I'm thinking I want to live in the Hyde Park area with a roommate.
I know there is the UT discussion forum, but let's face it, the formatting of that site is somewhat of a pain to navigate. So who is going to create the Texas Law 2013 facebook group?

interesting. when i started the general consensus was '10 and '11 were screwed, but '12 will be fine. the more things change, the more they stay the same.philosoraptor wrote:Speaking of ITE, the general consensus of those in the know was that '011 and '012 are screwed, but we'll be aight. Actually I think that's what they said and I misquoted. It's this year's graduates and next year's who are screwed. I'll fix, thanks.yournamehere wrote:interesting. when i started the general consensus was '10 and '11 were screwed, but '12 will be fine. the more things change, the more they stay the same.philosoraptor wrote:Speaking of ITE, the general consensus of those in the know was that '011 and '012 are screwed, but we'll be aight. i don't think i've formally introduced myself! Texas was my first choice, and the only doubts I've had came in the form of a 75% ride from SMU. After ASD (and the sweet grant money!), I will for sure be at UT come August. I'm so excited to meet y'all!

I'm in the same boat as adrib (congrats on the choice, btw!), but replace SMU with Tulane. Nevertheless, I'll be in Austin come August too, and I'm thrilled!
+1 to the comment above about how bright and engaging our new classmates were at ASD. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone!
