UNC c/o 2013
When the waiting is over and the e-mail from Dean States has rolled in ... Come on by, relax, and grab a tall glass of sweet tea.
This thread is for anyone who has been admitted to UNC Chapel Hill this cycle and ranges from seriously considering the school to thoroughly devoted to it. We can talk decision-making process, scholarships, the school's qol, living arrangements and employment prospects. And here's hoping more TLSers join us with good news soon.
I'm an NC native who attended college in Boston with stints in London and Key West. I've been back in the Triangle for a couple years and am pretty damn psyched to be attending UNC and then starting my career here. Ask me questions about the area if you have them.
What about everyone else?

The scholars weekend is this month, anyone know what it is? Has anyone been notified of money yet?

I really want to go to UNC, but I have really good scholarships from similar and lower ranked schools, has anyone heard about scholarships? or by when should we be hearing?

No scholarships have been handed out yet according to LSN data.
I'm also seeing scholarships only for A) URMs and B) LSATs above the 75th (so, 165+ this year?). Does anyone know if this is accurate, or just selectively reported LSN data?

I also wonder how accurate LSN is because it seems that as late as UNC gives out schollys, many people might have already withdrawn? As a UNC undergrad I am excited about the prospects of possibly getting a scholarship, but worried about the most recent OCI and the state of the economy.

I really want to come here. The OOS price tag is high though. How tough is it to get 2L and 3L residency?

I'm about 95% sure I will be attending UNC in the fall. I think the extra 5% will come after I actually visit...just want to make sure I'm making the right choice!
The acceptance email mentioned we'd be getting more info in the next few weeks, but I saw that a few of the earlier admits (in other threads) say that it took a lot longer to finally get the snail mail packet. Any idea on how long it will take?

Damn I was really hoping this would not be the case. I know in undergrad it is next to impossible to establish residency but I was hoping it would be different for the law school

As far as living goes: I live just north of campus (Church/Pritchard area) Don't live here if you don't have to. Although it is very close to bars it is all undergrads and is far from the law school.
Live East or West of campus if you can. Even though these neighborhoods are more expensive they are much nicer houses and the neighborhood have a much more mature feel to them
just my two cents.

MyTwoCents, you are my numbers twin. And while I haven't visited the law school yet (I wanted to wait to get in), Chapel Hill is pretty fabulous, so I'm sure your 5% that's in reserve will be persuaded.
And, FYI, in past years' threads there are people reporting getting decent size scholarships (7,500) as late as early April. Not sure about stats, but it seems like smaller amounts may keep trickling in.

The price of property there is crazy compared to 2 hours down the road here in Fayetteville. I am about 75% sure I will be at Chapel Hill next fall. I wasn't expecting to get such good offers from a couple of other schools, so now the ball is in UNC's court to give me a couple of dollars

here is a link to residency requirements. The term domicile scares me.

haha hell yes! I've been to Chapel Hill a few times and really enjoyed it. It's a little more college town-ish than I'm used to (I went to UG in Raleigh and loved it), but that's not necessarily a bad thing.MandyNC wrote:MyTwoCents, you are my numbers twin. And I was waiting to get in to visit, too. I thought that if I visited beforehand it would either: a. get my hopes up or b. jinx my chances of getting in. I'm a little superstitious as you can tell..
This is totally a word on the street kind of thing, but I thought URMs had a way better chance of getting scholarships? TBH, I wasn't counting on getting anything $$-wise from UNC. In-state tuition was good enough for me!

Re: UNC c/o 2013
actually for what its worth, even though establishing residency is always said to be hard, i rmr an article in the DTH (school newspaper) talking about a really high success rate for those that did apply for residency, and those that appealed a rejection had a very high % of success too. Might be something worth looking into for you guys.
lawhawk, are you a carolina undergrad? i was under the assumption if you were OOS as an undergrad it would be pretty easy to be instate for grad school.
and for anyone that is planning on visiting...Chapel Hill is amazing, i wish i was going to be there for another 3 years

I have a friend who is at the Pharmacy School and he paid OOS for his first year but he changed over EVERYTHING (driver's license, voter registration, license plates, pays NC taxes, etc. etc.) and he got IS for his second year. So it CAN happen but you have to really dedicate yourself to it. Check out this site for UNC residency info: http://gradschool.unc.edu/student/residency/
EDIT: I'm a genius, I just NOW realized (a day later) that lawhawk posted the exact same link above me. >.<

Unless you're URM or have ridiculous numbers, in-state applicants will not be seeing much money.
