You've gotta be one risk-loving sonofagun coming to law school paying full tuition ITE. Just saying.

Even if I agreed that for the general population Cornell at sticker constituted a significant risk (and I don't, necessarily) my personal circumstances make it less so. I also think it is a silly assumption that "ITE" is applicable to the economy three years from now. Also I tend to make big life and financial decision based on factors other than the collective wisdom of 0Ls on an internet message board.

The assumptions. . . they boggle the mind.

Regarding the economy? I could be wrong, but my money (150K of it) is on it being better in 3 years. Only time will tell, but I'm making an educated guess. As to the rest of it, I know my own circumstances which I'd be happy to discuss via PM but would rather not post online. Also, I'm not planning on BigLaw so IBR and Cornell's LRAP matter more than 30K total merit aid I was offered at other T20s.

I do appreciate you role on these threads, fshon. It has helped me solidify that I'm making the right choice.

outgoing 3L here (or 4L, if you will). the economy will probably be better in 3 years but what mainly matters for incoming 1Ls is the economic outlook in fall 2011, when your OCI will take place. i would expect the outlook to be better than it is now and, more importantly, that the bottleneck of incoming biglaw associates (the deferred classes of 2009 and 2010) will be mostly cleared, which will mean that firms will be able to take on more summers. when i applied to law school in 2006/2007, T14 meant you got biglaw unless you absolutely blew your 1L year. last year I think you needed to do well AND interview well to get biglaw. going forward it will get easier than that to land a firm gig, but it remains to be seen how much easier.

Also, there have been some 0Ls looking for roommates to share a place across this thread, and in discussions on the official Cornell Law Class of 2013 Facebook group and the unofficial TLS Cornell Class of 2013 group (that's where all the cool kids are.) Hey all, I was thinking about it, and it would be great if we all had a place to talk to one another with some locationally sensitive information (such as where we are living, and meet-ups and such), that we may not want broadcasted out to the world. So I have created a secret Facebook group for TLS Cornell Class of 2013. PM me with your email address and I will send the invite to join.

Because it is a secret group, membership will not appear on your profile, and no one will be able to find it in search results (until Facebook f*cks that up).

Edit: Also make sure that the email address is the one you use for Facebook. Some have had issues if the email is not the main email for their Facebook account. Use your Facebook contact email, which is under Account Settings, Settings, Email. It should be the address next to "Set your email contact information".

I've still gotta believe this is a best case scenario. Hope springs eternal, but the costs of law school (tuition + COL + opportunity costs) may not justify it.

i always wonder about the COL argument. like, aren't you going to be paying rent/mortgage/utilities whether or not you're attending LS? i don't really take it into account.

Typically you aren't borrowing the cost of living, to be paid back with interest. So I think it qualifies in terms of overall debt load. I think if you plan on paying COL from savings, spousal income, or living at home then it doesn't really count towards "cost of attendance."

ahh, that makes sense. didn't consider that. in that case, our COL has more to do with the interest rather than the principal, in my opinion.

Plus, COL factors into the LS decision because COL at the law school you would attend might be higher/lower than COL wherever you would be living your time otherwise. COL is a big factor if you'd attend Columbia or NYU, but otherwise would live in Peoria.

I've heard that all of the male rooms in Hughes Hall (the 1L dorms) are taken. I was just accepted by Cornell a couple of days ago, so I didn't make that cutoff. I know I'm not the only one who hasn't secured housing yet.

Padmapper has been a relatively good resource. I am trying to decide how much money it is worth spending. We live in a tiny closet in Santa Monica but we're right by the beach and don't spend that much time indoors, so it is completely liveable. I feel like we should hedge against the Ithaca winter by getting something with a little more space and amenities that make the winter easier (washing machine, parking, etc). But then I feel like we are spending way to much for Ithaca, and we're going to be comically broke already. I have seen a few decent places, but people are taking forever to get back to me. Good luck looking! At least you can go back and visit, which should make this easier.

Looks like getting a car is going to be necessary. I keep forgetting that it's probably not reasonable to think I can ride my bike to school year-round (God, I'm going to miss California). I put myself on the housing waitlist but I'm not expecting much there. I'm planning on spending a week looking for places in June.

From the few times I've been up there, it seems like the students rely on the TCAT bus service pretty heavily. I've also heard that part of our tuition goes to an unlimited bus pass our first year.

All of the above is credited re: the bus. I (and many others) took the bus to the LS every day this year. It is free for the first year. Busses are fairly convenient and run frequently. Welcome to Cornell y'all!
