Do any of you know of any decent furnished apartments close to campus? I won't be able to make it to Austin before school begins, and I won't have a car to haul around a bunch of furniture. Damn you, Pittsburgh. Why do you have to be so far from Austin?

Salvation Army ftw? That's my plan, with creatively stacked cardboard boxes as a fallback.

I paid for the summer parking pass at San Jacinto lot ($131) so I'll renew it and definitely get a spot in August.
It may not have been necessary, but I was afraid it may be full on 8/10, the first day we could apply for fall/spring pass.

It sounded like the parking guy said that renewals for for fall/spring and annual students only, not summer (though it may very well be), and I would rather not spend $131. The $600 is already ridiculous enough. Whaaaatever.

SJG is $705 for the fall and spring. I called twice on different days and was told by both contacts that with a summer pass I'd automatically get to renew before the registration date available to others. In my case I didn't want to risk the garage being full in August (which I've heard happens) and put on a wait list. Sure there are other further away garages, but thinking about the the heat in Texas and rainy days made it worth it to me to pay the $131. Individual choice / gamble.

Its $705 for University Residence Hall Students, and $602 for commuters. So unless you're living on campus, you're paying the $602.

At the risk of sounding like a TLS broken record, I need two pieces of advice. The reason I am asking on this thread specifically is because I need an Austin/UT perspective.

1) I'm in the market for a new computer. I want to get a MacBook Pro, but I was wondering if the operating system/lack of Windows will be a problem at UT. (i.e. Is there any software we need that can only be run on Windows)

2) I am also in the market for a new bicycle, by which I will commute to campus every day. Should I invest in a mountain bike or road bike? Again, think about Austin. I'll be traveling approx 2 miles.

2) Most people ride hybrids, road bikes, or fixie road bikes. I'd go with a road bike or a good hybrid, something with 700 wheels and not 26s - something that can move fast is best, and since you don't have to worry about snow here, there isn't much of a reason to get a mountain bike for everyday riding. It is preferable to go with a hybrid or road bike and carry plenty of spare tires to deal with the inevitable flats.

1) Can't speak to the law school but the UT campus and Tech support is Mac friendly. The campus computer store is very pro-Mac as well.

2) I would get a pseudo-mountain bike or hybrid. Honestly a $100 bike from a discount store like Target or Wal-mart will serve you fine. I would avoid a road bike or even a fixie road bike because they don't normally have shocks.
