sadly, she didn't get into WUSTL
That does suck. How do they look at re-applicants? How early did she apply? R1, R2, R3, or R4?

i believe she was R2 for WUSTL. In general, unfortunately, Bschools do not look well on re-applicants. You have to do something pretty significant to improve your package to get in on the second try.

Part of the reason I'm so spread out is because my GF is applying to MBA programs.

She got an interview at UCLA which is why USC and UCLA are still on the list.
She's on the waitlist at Columbia.
She's in at ND.

So how should I narrow my list based on this (and desire to be in proximity of possible)?

Columbia (see if we both get in off of waitlist, but even if she didn't it'd be hard for me to pass up)
Chicago (would be hard to justify passing this up especially since i currently live in CHI)
ND (if they match wustl scholly and she goes to ND)
Cornell (if she gets columbia and I dont)
USC / UCLA (if she gets UCLA)

1) If i were just worrying about me, i'd get rid of everything except CC and WUSTL
2) It's not just me. So i'm keeping Cali options open in case she gets UCLA, and aggressively pursuing ND in case she attends there.

In either case it looks like I keep CC.
Special considerations add USC,UCLA [I'm hesitant to just keep one or the other because who knows what would happen]
Maybe I can get Cornell off the list then? Cornell at sticker over WUSTL seems meh.

Thanks for any updated thoughts you have after hearing more information :)
How serious are things with this girl? They sound serious enough to warrant consideration of where she is at. Why didn't she apply to the Olin business school at WUSTL?

If she goes to ND and you get off the WL at Chicago, that would be doable. Chicago and South Bend aren't too far away.

Do you think a long distance relationship is manageable? If she went to ND and you went to WUSTL, would that be something you could manage?

If it were me, I'd tell the girl to come with me to WUSTL and she could work while I'm in LS. Then we could switch it up and she could do the MBA and I'd support her.
Very serious. If we are not in the same city we WILL do long distance. We'd just prefer not to, obviously. I'm hesitant to ask her to just delay her plans to attend school because i know she wants to go back just as badly as I do. And the thing about applying for an MBA is you really have to show career progression. Uprooting and getting a new job is something that's not going to help her application package :(

If you are willing to make long distance work, then you should do it. A near full ride at WUSTL is nothing to shrug at, and you shouldn't sacrifice your financial and career well-being for the opportunity to be with her for three years. If you think WUSTL is your best option at this point and you think you can stay together during your three years, you should go there... for both your sake and hers.

I'll add that it would be her financial well being you are sacrificing as well if the relationship works out.

Do the long distance thing. It's the best choice unless you get into Chicago or Columbia. Unfortunately, you won't know about that until it's probably too late for her to decide.

St. Louis and South Bend are about 6 hours away from each other, but you could meet up in Chicago occasionally. You could also meet up in my hometown, which is roughly halfway up I-55. I'll give you the skinny on good places to eat and hang out. :D

Good point.

So final list looks like:
WUSTL (in) - 114k
Columbia (WL)
Chicago (WL)
ND (WL) - will take if they bring me in off of WL and match WUSTL scholly
USC (WL) - only on my list in case she gets UCLA
UCLA (WL) - only on my list in case she gets UCLA
Cornell (withdraw) - can't seem to justify Cornell given wustl situation.

As I often say, employment prospects are not the only prospects I'm concerned with in law school.

I'm in the exact same situation in regards to vacation time and my lease! I'm actually glad I'll be forced to move to St. Louis a couple of weeks prior to orientation. Hopefully it will give me some time to get acclimated to the city before school starts.

If you want any semi-insider tips, let me know. I say semi because I myself have never lived there, but I've been there more times than I can count, and AT LEAST twice per year for the last decade.

i went there for undergrad. so feel free to ask me questions as well. As far as getting acclimated to the "city", you won't spend much time in the CITY of St. Louis. You'll spend more time in Central West End, Loop, maybe Clayton. Some nights you may go to the City for the landing, or laclede street, or humphry's or Pepper Lounge.

I graduated 5 years ago though, so there may have been some changes.

I really liked Washington Ave. There was a club there that plays house music on Saturday nights, plus a bunch of other interesting bars. I love electronic music...there's not much of it in St. Louis, but I think it can hold its own. There's a couple of places on Grand Ave. southward that also have good music.

CWE is in the City of St Louis. The Hill is also in the city, where some might go to eat Italian food.

Morning WUSTLers. I'm always bummed when I get on TLS and there has been no activity in this thread, so I'm bumping it for my own sake.

How is everybody doing today? Let me hear some of that pre-Wash U excitement.

I think in my head I'm beginning to become accustomed to the idea of being in St. Louis for school. I mean I was there for undergrad and I know it's a great place.

I'm starting to get excited. I just have so many other things to think about before that happens. It's daunting. I feel like my life is pretty crazy at the moment. And not necessarily the good kind of crazy.

I don't know if you all will find this exciting BUT:

1) This is my last week at work and I'm moving to STL on Friday
2) Have signed a 2 year lease on a house in u-city with some friends that I grew up with
3) Will be enjoying the humid STL summer for the first time in a very long time

That is very exciting! Congrats on finishing up with work... that must feel nice. I'm oh so close to being done with school. I just presented my big two-year capstone project last weekend and now I just need to finish the paper, and I should be smooth sailing into graduation.
