To be clear, I was not arguing with the logic of living close. If I wasn't married and could afford the higher rent, I might live closer myself. The entire point of my comment was to suggest that it is possible to live far away and still keep up. Esc had implied that those that lived far away regretted it. I was offering a counter point. It comes down to what you're looking for. I hear Hyde Park is quite nice and popular as is the Far West area.

I would also never argue with the ability to walk to Trudy's. Mexican Martini Monday is a very useful tool after a long day of class.

Hyde Park Peeps: Are you planning on walking or biking to class? I rode my bike down the other day and it was a breeze. I'm thinking about fixing up an old bike and making the transition to fixed gear for a class bike. I don't want my road bike sitting out there all day.

I'll probably try to bike. I need to quit being lazy and get my old hand-me-down into the shop. (It's one of those where you don't need a wrench to take the wheels off, and the last time I did that I think I screwed up the brakes.) Maybe I'll try to trade it in for something that's not ridiculous.

I'd never heard of "fixed gear" before I saw your post and googled it. What is the advantage there? Seems like it would suck not to be able to coast, but then again my bike knowledge is limited to getting from point A to point B without dying in a fiery crash.

In reference to eLegal's email: I know a bunch of people who did Law Preview last summer. From what I hear, it's only worth it if you can get V&E to pay for it. At least two people in my small section got that scholarship, so it seems they give it to a good number.

The advantage is low maintenance. Fixies are perfect commuter bikes because you don't have to worry about your chain popping off when you shift gears. Technically you can coast if you take your feet off the pedals and let them free spin.

How you can manage to die in a fiery crash while traveling via a bike without gasoline amazes me though... LoL

HaHa why not have the best of both worlds? I have a road bike and make full use of my gears while riding through the hills around 2222 but plan to build a fixie for the 10 blocks between my house and the school. Hoping to do so through FrankenBike and YellowBike and not spend more than $100.

I did Law Preview on the V&E Scholarship. It was nice to get some familiarity with basic concepts, but it is a lot of time to take up and a lot of information. If you have nothing better to do from 8-5 on a given day, then go for it.

No chance I would have paid actual money for it, though.

EDIT: I just bought it. I will definitely commute and do not want to risk the close garage.

I was told that if you bought a garage pass, you had a guaranteed spot (for the $600 permit). For the commuter permit or whatever (the longhorn lots?), its was like $130 for the year without a guaranteed spot. The ones on sale now are for the summer, and end on 8/31, so that won't work for us.

Anyone with some experience wanna shed some light?
