Except Duke is going to be awesome, so it was not a bad cycle.

Pretty crazy that Justice Breyer is going to be at the school.

Good job on the avatar picture. They get a good number of justices at Duke, but Breyer seems to be the only one who keeps coming back. Scalia taught a seminar class and Breyer has also judged a competition, right?DallasCowboy wrote:Pretty crazy that Justice Breyer is going to be at the school.

If the guy that I met during ASO who is in the Drama Society has a good role in that production I really, really want to see it. I don't want to name names here but I really hope someone else knows who I'm talking about. This guy is so funny, energetic, and really sharp.Jericwithers wrote:OMG yes yes yes! Also, Duke 2010-2011 budget is up (not sure when that happened). Not a very big change, good!

Hey all,DallasCowboy wrote:Pretty crazy that Justice Breyer is going to be at the school.
2nd yr Duke JD/MBA here...haven't been on this site for a while but i used to be on here all the time when i was applying and during my first year. I have to say, i love it here at duke, so congrats on getting into a fantastic school. As for the Breyer quote above, i can happily say that such visits are not at all rare. Last year our moot court finals were judged by Scalia, who also taught a class here last yr. Last week, Al Gore spoke here and Jamie Dimon (JPMorgan CEO and duke alum) was next door at Fuqua. I actually won't be attending Breyer's talk wedsnesday because, given my interest in private equity, i'll be going to a private equity conference put on by the business school (and open to any grad student) where the keynote speaker is Chris Williams, founder of Harris Williams and the panel includes a who's who of the PE world...Carlyle group etc. Speaking of PE, last year i was psyched to listen to a panel of Stephen Schwarzman (Blackstone CEO whose son graduated from Duke Law in 2006), as well as two duke law alumns, one of whom founded Madison Dearborn partners and another who runs the Chinese sovereign wealth fund. Interested in entrepreneurship? One of my professors, a duke law alum (who just happened to have an undergrad degree in chemical engineering from MIT), with whom i have several classes, was a partner at Sidley, managing director at goldman sachs and executive director at morgan stanley before deciding to start his own venture capital firm (at which point duke asked if he wanted to also do some teaching). In conjunction with the b-school, as well as the schools of engineering and medicine, he runs the Duke Startup competition where you can put together a business plan and go through several rounds of pitching it. If you win, you get $25,000 for your company...not to mention your final pitch is to GOOGLE!! The b-school has consistently been climbing the ranks and is currently ranked above some very solid b-schools (i.e. MIT, Tuck -- depending on which rankings you look at -- and Michigan, Darden, Cornell). And our curriculum really is interdisciplinary and practrical. Right now, i'm in two separate LAW SCHOOL classes where i'm doing mock transactions with a group, and my group includes an MBA student who is going into i-banking, an LLM who has practiced M&A law in Belgium for 2 years, and two 2Ls. I'll stop ranting, but just wanna say, this place is great and getting better. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me (better to do that since i rarely return to this site).

Re: Duke Class of 2013
^^^see rant above. I had actually committed to Texas when i got into Duke of the WL. I had about the same $ as you...$40K total at Texas. Texas is an awesome school in a fun town, but it just isn't Duke. The state of Texas is the only target market for which you can really make an argument to choose UT over Duke...and we do pretty darn well in Texas so even that would be a tough sell for me.Jericwithers wrote:Oh my goodness Texas increased my scholarship amount to $15k a year. EDIT: I should add that i chose Duke over UT despite 1) having gone to UNC undergrad; 2) being in LOVE with the idea of going to Texas; and 3) getting slightly more money from Texas.

Im from Texas and for biglaw it is the only place I would want to be (besides maybe LA). The 2x debt it just a lot. I like the connections you speak of between the law and business school though. The entrepreneurship clinical seems real interesting.philo-sophia wrote:^^^see rant above. I had actually committed to Texas when i got into Duke of the WL. Saw your situation in the other thread. I have to say, if staying in Texas is your likely goal, this is a tough call. They're both great schools. In any market but Texas, there's no doubt that Duke wins, but in Texas it's basically a toss up. What i would say, though, is that if you're thinking of going into BigLaw, $40K is not a lot of money in the grand scheme, so pick which school you feel you'll be happy with over the next three years as well as 10 yrs from now when your loans are paid off.

Re: Duke Class of 2013
So I have $18k/yr from Duke, $20k/yr from BU, and a full ride from Yeshiva. The latter two expire on the 15th. Do you think they'll have any impact on Duke's offer?
I was glad to see they matched UT's offer; is BU similar enough to UT to make a difference?
Either way, how should I handle it since the other offers are expiring soon? I hope I didn't miss an opportunity.
Someone on here said they wouldn't consider appeals until after the deposit date, so I figured I would just wait and send in my appeal with my deposit. But now, I'm worried I made a mistake....
