Re: SMU Class of 2013/2014
At the risk of sounding foolish... what the heck are we supposed to get done between now and orientation?
I've done the following:
1. Sent in the full deposit
2. Had an official transcript sent to the school
3. Filled out the health record form (need to send that in)
4. Filled out the FASFA with SMU's code
5. Logged into my Access SMU account and email
Eventually, SMU will deal with the FASFA and I'll need to do the rest of the stuff to get the loan money flowing.... but is there anything else I'm missing? I'm probably just paranoid, but I would hate to overlook something important.

That list looks complete to me.Sangiovese wrote:At the risk of sounding foolish... what the heck are we supposed to get done between now and orientation?...
I was worried about the health questionnaire--as soon as I dropped it in the mail I couldn't remember if I had signed it in all the necessary places. Embarrassing since it specifically tells you where to sign.

It shows marked "complete" so I'm assuming what I sent was okay.

The Village places look pretty decent, relatively cheap (2BR for 1000-1100 or so), and some have gotten fine reviews on apt review sites.Thirteen wrote:Has anyone had luck finding relatively cheap housing? I want to live close, but it seems like most of the nice places are in the $900 range. Also, is anyone looking for 1 or 2 roommates?

When is the health questionnaire due? Also does anyone know how we enroll for SMUs health insurance/when that deadline is?

There is no date in the documentation, it only says that the questionnaire must be submitted before enrollment.tinyone wrote:When is the health questionnaire due?

SMU finished as the 99th best party law school. I'm not really sure what that means or how to take that but it is interesting that it's all the way to one extreme.

Does anyone know if SMU has discounts on PC/Mac software and laptop purchases?

Actually, I re-read it and there is a deadline of July 1st.

Anyone moving to Dallas during the summer? My lease starts on July 15, so I'll probably be out there by the last week of July.

Can someone provide a review on the graduate dorms? Are they worth it? I inquired about being able to view a room next week and they denied my request. They stated that they would not have a unit to view at that time.

I'm looking to move to Dallas btw July 15 and Aug 1. Did you get a house or an apartment, and did you use a realtor or did you just search yourself?Thirteen wrote:Anyone moving to Dallas during the summer? My lease starts on July 15, so I'll probably be out there by the last week of July.
I'm looking for a house if you have any tips on finding one i'd appreciate it!

I found an apartment on my own using apartments.com and Craigslist, but would have used a locator if I had time to go to Dallas. If you need a house, I'm sure a realtor would make your search easier.UTL_plz wrote:I'm looking to move to Dallas btw July 15 and Aug 1. Does anyone have any thoughts on housing? Right now I'm thinking of sharing a 2 BR in downtown or uptown area. I'll be checking the area out this weekend, but does anyone have any thoughts on those areas or any other suggestions for housing in Dallas? Thanks.

How much are you looking at paying? Do you mind driving much? Plano is a nice area with very affordable housing and it's 13 miles up 75. You might want to look into stuff there. I don't know anything about Dallas housing, so I can't help you on that, but I have spent a good amount of time in Plano/Allen and really like it.bass08 wrote:Does anyone have any thoughts on housing? Were any of you at tonight's ASD? I met a few people but TLS didn't really come up. I was the guy who assumed "casual dress" meant "shorts."

I saw you too, Squ1rtle, you brought a guest also. I liked Stephanie's tour remark about the dangling ceiling access door, "that's a lawsuit waiting to happen!"
I'm glad I went--I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting. I really only talked to the folks who were at my table: two paralegals, one university instructor, admissions Maggie, and me and my guest.
I think there was only one at the table who wasn't entirely committed to SMU in the Fall.

Hopefully us PT guys without jobs in the fall will have the time to make more than one
I was unable to make the PT ASD on Thursday due to family graduations all weekend. Can anyone sum up what took place? Thanks.

Damn. Hopefully you plan on taking a day off to mourn on October 2. There's no way I'm missing that game.betasteve wrote:Don't forget that the law school has a tailgate that provides free food and beer. Re: SMU Class of 2013/2014
Kids, congratulations on selecting an excellent school. What is most moving about Dedman is how much they care about their students. Take for instance the newly instituted "Test Drive" program. SMU will pay employers $3,500 for one month to a private sector employer to hire a Dedman alum (who could not find legal employment). Of course there is no obligation to continue said employment after the month is done. Yet, at least the Dedman alum can put a month of legal experience on his/her resume and the law school gets to boost its employment numbers (you know, the ones that tend to sell unsuspecting college kids and the the USNWR). If you were smart, withdraw and ask for a refund. Otherwise, you may wind up being test driven (or roadkill for that matter).
For more on your school's "Test Drive" program, please read the following article that was recently featured on Above the Law:
