Re: Texas 2013
OK - Important question:
How does the football ticket situation work? Where I went to undergrad, students got in for free. Given, my UG was awful and no one ever went. I know about ticket priorities and everything, so how much (if any?) are game tickets.. for home games, the UT v. OU game, A&M v UT? This is definitely an imporant consideration for my happiness next year, haha.

I never went to OU or A&M games (I suck as a Longhorn) but I believe you can only get an OU ticket through a raffle (I think you can buy them early if you have season tickets) and A&M is open to all season ticket holders when it is home and open to a raffle if it is away. For regular games you can either do the LASP for $80ish and you have to go draw for your ticket a week before every game, or for $60 more you can get a season ticket and have the same seat and print your ticket before going.mcflooter06 wrote:OK - Important question:

Re: Texas 2013
Fairly accurate. To go to games, you buy a LASP (Longhorns All Sports Package). This gets you into every sporting event and allows you to draw for football tickets. If you want guaranteed football tickets, you can purchase season tickets. If you want OU tickets, you can also purchase 1 at this time. As grad students, we have second priority (under seniors, above juniors). If aTm is a home game, it is included in your season ticket package. If it is an away game, you can purchase it just like OU.Jericwithers wrote:I never went to OU or A&M games (I suck as a Longhorn) but I believe you can only get an OU ticket through a raffle (I think you can buy them early if you have season tickets) and A&M is open to all season ticket holders when it is home and open to a raffle if it is away. The lockers are $45 for one if you provide your own padlock, $60 for a key locker. It sucks that we have to pay for them but they are saviors. Its great to be able to leave most books at school overnight.

to Jordyn's dismay I just got 15k/yr today from UT and threw down my first deposit. Switching from sticker to sticker-45k certainly changes things slightly. Like I said I didn't dislike the school at ASD, just wasn't blown away. BC w/ 18k/yr vs UT w/ 15k/yr. Thoughts? (Although perhaps I'm asking the wrong group...)

Anybody hear back after a scholarship match request yet? Or does anybody know how long they take? I may have to call on Monday with with the deadline looming.

Re: Texas 2013
Mine was denied; they told me at ASD a few days after I sent the letter. In the same conversation, I seem to recall their telling me I had a few thousand a year in grants (presumably need-based), yet when I checked the financial aid page for the first time today, I saw only loans. Did this happen to anyone else? (Will be checking my notes from the meeting when I get home from work to confirm.)DallasCowboy wrote:Anybody hear back after a scholarship match request yet? i agree with bolded. the other professor, not anderson, woolley i think, reminded me of bill cosby and i'm pretty sure from the snickers i heard in the class that other people thought so too. not very impressive, to say the least, and he's supposed to be one of the faculty all-stars? austin was great. ut not so much.imisscollege wrote:I wasn't convinced by ASD. I grew tired of hearing about how UT is the best school in TEXAS and how the career fair is the biggest IN TEXAS. Like yeah obviously. And the comments about how Texas is first in TX, SMU is 3rd, and there is nothing in between just served to hammer this in more. If anything, I would have intuitively thought UT had a more national presence than was indicated to me at ASD. That combined with everybody talking about how for the months of the summer, you have to run from house to house due to heat plus the fact that the Austin legal market is a fraction the size of Dallas/Houston and everybody hates Dallas/Houston makes me feel worse about UT than I did before ASD.
The professor who taught my mock class (there were two) did not impress me relative to the professors I have experienced at peer schools.

I'm in Woolley's class right now. I wouldn't call him an all-star, but he's good. I won't pretend that the subject is very interesting (CivPro...not very much you can do with that) or that his manner of speaking is riveting, but he is still a really good professor who explains the subject quite well and breaks it down so that anyone can understand it. He is also insanely dedicated to his students. His office is open pretty much any time, and he is always willing to help anyone at length. And he has been taking the entire class out to lunch or dinner 3 at a time throughout the semester, and later on he is taking everyone to a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse. Pretty cool.zanyventer wrote:i agree with bolded. the other professor, not anderson, woolley i think, reminded me of bill cosby and i'm pretty sure from the snickers i heard in the class that other people thought so too. not very impressive, to say the least, and he's supposed to be one of the faculty all-stars? austin was great. ut not so much.imisscollege wrote:I wasn't convinced by ASD. i heard back about a week after i submitted and was very blessed to have recieved a scholarship. it was small but anything helps. UT also gave me grants through financial aid that pretty much amounted to what my scholly was so essentially i got double my scholarship.DallasCowboy wrote:Anybody hear back after a scholarship match request yet? It took them about four days to get back to me after I submitted the request. Hey, does anybody know of any nontraditional prospects leaning toward Texas? I'm a (cough) little older than the average student myself, and I'm wanting to talk about related stuff.
Also, any other Sooners? I'm wondering how many different ways I can manage to be a misfit.
lol.

Re: Texas 2013
btw, a couple more thoughts about football tickets:
Like the others said, you can guarantee yourself a seat for $130 or so by buying the LASP + the season ticket add on. BUT, if you have a spouse or somebody else you want to bring along, you have to pay the regular season ticket price for them, which is about 400 this year. (I'd complain, except this is a bargain compared to OU season tix. No idea why the Big 12 inflates ticket prices so much.)
You can also add on a Red River (OU-UT) ticket at face value for yourself, but no ticket for your guest. Red River tickets were $100 last year. Street value for the Red River tickets is obscene, though - up to a thousand or more a pair - so definitely save yourself the time and money and drop the Franklin for one if you can.

Don't think that'll happen anytime soon. The CSO guy was clearly astounded (or faked being so) when the Vandy stats were mentioned.batmansion wrote:I'm also very curious as to whether UT will post its alumni salaries a la Vanderbilt.

Re: Texas 2013
New topic to consider.
With the emergence of the Kindle, ereader, and iPAD, when will we begin to see more digital books? Is this something we can start looking into already? Even if we can just get our reference materials (Blacks, etc.) on one it would be a serious space/weight saver.
I know Westlaw is already an online source but I'm not sure what other reference sources we will use as 1Ls.

So is the consensus that everyone lives in Hyde Park? If so, would I be able to afford living alone?
