According to the UT parking website, it is free to students.

Edit: And one of the bus stops from the rail is the law school, sweeeet.

Re: Texas 2013
OK, guys, here's the housing info from ASD, cleaned up slightly. Enjoy, and if TLSers want to make additions or corrections based on their own experiences, I can edit accordingly. (FYI for fellow out-of-towners, MoPac = Loop 1, west of I-35.)
AUSTIN HOUSING INFORMATION
ARBORETUM (78759)
Near tons of shopping and restaurants, this area is convenient to Hwy. 183, which connects to both MoPac and I-35.
Advantages: Nice, newer properties at affordable prices
Disadvantages: 20-minute drive from campus and downtown
Average rent: $515-$1,400
Accessibility to campus: Car
BARTON CREEK (78746)
With direct access to MoPac, and near 360 and 290, the Barton Creek area is close to campus and downtown.
Advantages: Newer properties; right by Barton Creek Mall, the most popular mall in Austin
Disadvantages: 20-minute drive to campus
Average rent: $875-$1,650
Accessibility to campus: Car
CAMERON (78752)
A popular area for law students, Cameron Road is convenient to I-35, Hwy. 183 and Hwy 290.
Advantages: Very convenient shuttle service, low rent for spacious apartments, close to campus (10-minute drive), plenty of parking
Disadvantages: Older neighborhood, not much to do in the immediate area
Average rent: $525-$850
Accessibility to campus: Bus (UT shuttle and/or Capital Metro)
DOWNTOWN and SOUTH CONGRESS (78701, 78704)
This area includes the Enfield and Tarrytown areas as well as actual downtown and South Congress Avenue.
Advantages: "You are downtown!"; close to campus
Disadvantages: Expensive; more congested, metropolitan part of Austin
Average rent: $650-plus
Accessibility to campus: Car, bicycle, bus (UT shuttle and/or Capital Metro)
EAST SIDE (78722, 78723)
Advantages: Close to downtown and campus (5-10 minutes driving); can rent a house (with more space, backyard, etc.) for the price of an apartment; residential atmosphere
Disadvantages: Would more than likely need a roommate; although property value is vastly increasing, can still be viewed as a higher-crime area than other parts of Austin
Average rent: $525-$1,000
Accessibility to campus: Car, bicycle, bus (UT shuttle and/or Capital Metro)
FAR WEST (78731)
Far West Boulevard is located about 15 minutes northwest of campus. There are also rentals located on 2222, Spicewood Springs, and Steck, which are all located adjacent to Far West Boulevard.
Advantages: On the bus route, easy access to MoPac, convenient to shopping and food and close to the arboretum area, nice, newer properties at affordable prices
Disadvantages: Typically 15 minutes from campus or downtown; can be longer depending on the time of day and on traffic
Average rent: $600-$1,250
Accessibility to campus: Car, bus (UT shuttle and/or Capital Metro)
HYDE PARK (78705, 78751)
Hyde Park is the neighborhood directly north of campus where you will find houses and apartments available for rent.
Advantages: On the bus route; easy access to MoPac; convenient to shopping and food and close to the arboretum area; nice, newer properties at affordable prices
Disadvantages: Typically 15 minutes from campus or downtown; can be longer depending on the time of day and on traffic
Average rent: $600-$1,250
Accessibility to campus: Bicycle, walking, bus (UT shuttle and/or Capital Metro)
PARMER (78727)
Parmer Lane is in north Austin and runs through MoPac and I-35.
Advantages: New, luxury apartments at a lower price; very convenient to major shopping centers (Super Target, Super Walmart, HEB, and more)
Disadvantages: 35-minute drive to campus and downtown in good traffic; can be longer if traffic is good
Average rent: $800-$1,300
Accessibility to campus: Car, bus (UT shuttle and/or Capital Metro)
DORMITORIES (78703, 78705)
On-campus dorms: http://www.utexas.edu/student/housing
University apartments: Reserved for families, grad students, and undergrads with 30 or more hours (515-232-5299 or dhfs.apartments@austin.utexas.edu)

that info was inaccurate last year and its still inaccurate. I think they just made up those "average rent" prices, and good luck trying to get from the arboretum to campus in 20 minutes at rush hour...

I've heard "The Triangle" is good...as well as the Robertson Hill Apartments. I will actually be visiting this weekend and going around to see some places with a realtor. I will let you all know what I find out!

Aside from the large amount of rent it will cost you to live there, you will spend the remainder of your money and the Flying Saucer, Yougurt Planet, Mandola's, and Galaxy Cafe.

Re: Texas 2013
Don't forget Sago! Delicious shrimp tacos and good HH specials. In regards to suggestions for improving the housing recommendations: it depends on your budget, of course, but I would hesitate to live more than a 10-15 bus ride to campus or to live somewhere that is not within walking distance or close to a bus route. The Triangle is very nice, and while 1br can run $1200+, the 2 and 3br are much more reasonable, more like $700-800. Hyde Park has some very nice (and not so nice) houses; if you have roommates or want to find some I highly recommend the area. I'd steer clear of Riverside and West Campus, for sure.UTaylor526 wrote:+1Jericwithers wrote:The Triangle is very nice, but expensive.rputt3256 wrote:I've heard "The Triangle" is good...as well as the Robertson Hill Apartments. NOW you tell me! My bus ride is going to be an unacceptable 17 minutes.Jericwithers wrote:+1. It's very nice to live within 15 minutes door to door bus ride from the campus, and I am sure that would be just as nice in law school.

Very unacceptable because you also have to account for the walking distance. Tisk, more like 21 minutes. The horror....soonergirl wrote:NOW you tell me! Submitted my scholarship matching request yesterday and got straight up denied today. Well, if Texas doesn't care about a full ride to Baylor, maybe I shouldn't either? I know, I know...I'm just trying to justify turning down the scholarship

It's an investment, and the return of UT is much greater to justify the debt. I know...it's just really hard to grasp that concept. However, I do have a friend that goes to Baylor law, and one of his recent Facebook status updates complained about how much it sucks there. It did make me feel a little better.Jericwithers wrote:It's an investment, and the return of UT is much greater to justify the debt.
