guys i just got into cardozo with a full scholarship. clearly it was a surprise (or i wouldn't be in this thread). this decision just got a lot tougher for me. my main goal is to work in NYC after law school. i was also born and raised in NYC, and was looking to stay, although i would take a 3 year sojourn for better career opportunities.

based on the pure numbers:
washu is #19, cardozo is #49 on us news.
washu is #24, cardozo is #30 on the NLJ250.

so all that considered what do you guys think?

How much did you get from WUSTL?

$38,000 a year -- so the money really isnt an issue.

i apologize for not noting that earlier.

In that case, WUSTL. Have you ever lived outside of New York for long? Sometimes being away from home can be good. WUSTL can definitely still get you a job there especially if you are from there.

yeah i went to boarding school in connecticut, college in ithaca, and worked a year in charlotte, north carolina, thats half of the appeal, i wanted to be home for an extended period of time, but i guess youre right, maybe i'll be able to focus better away from my fam and friends and the hustle and bustle of nyc.

The Midwest is a great place to live. Try it out! Also, think about COL. It will be much cheaper in St. Louis.

I dunno about this... if NYC is your goal, then I think you could make a very compelling argument for why you should go to Cardozo. The ability to network and gain experience there is going to be stronger if you are already in the city. Also, while WUSTL can get you into NYC, you will need to have really good grades. Its not like its easy to do.

You might be right about the networking opportunities; however, the firms in NYC that require good grades from WUSTL are also going to require good, if not better grades, from Cardozo. No reason why you couldn't go to WUSTL and get summer internships back in NYC, even if it's at a midlaw firm. But your general point is valid. Cardozo would make it easier to do that. I'd just personally have trouble turning down a school with a reputation like WUSTL.

yeah i figured we wouldn't move down in the rankings but i was hoping we would jump over usc. not that the rankings mean very much, but it would have been cool to see that happen.

also, getting any closer to choosing where to go?

Yeah, you've hit the crux of the matter here. Guaranteed money >>>>> an uncertain thing.

Not to worry, we'll catch or beat USC next year. Unfortunately, that will be a result of the "TTT in decline" effect rather than substantial gains, but WUSTL's a mercenary school, "sharklike" in the words of flcath. We'll take whatever we can get

Yes agreed. And yea I'm pretty much set on WUSTL. I wish I had a large scholly offer from WUSTL to make it an even easier choice over SMU like you but alas that's not the case. Also the fact that I'm from Dallas makes choosing WUSTL over SMU more difficult emotionally-wise. Friends, family and history is all here. But honestly, I'm sick of Dallas. If anything I'd love to move to Austin but I imagine that'll be difficult from either school. So in the end, I think I'm set on WUSTL. I'd love a new location and the chance to break into a market that isn't near where I've lived all of my life. Also, when I visited, I found St. Louis to be quite charming. I never really notice how "new" Dallas is until I spend time in other older cities. I think it really imparts more charm on a city and gives it more variety and character.

I actually wonder if UC Irvine is going to be good for WUSTL's future. A third law school in that area, if they manage to keep their medians where they are, will only pick off potential students from USC and UCLA, making it harder for them to compete median-wise.

No matter what, though the 15-18 spots are going to be tough to crack. For as much attention as the T14 gets, the T15-18 has been a solid group. Since 2000, these same four schools have occupied these spots, with the exception of one year when Minnesota and two other schools were tied with USC for 18. It even goes back to 1990, where at least three of these four schools were ranked 15-18 for that whole decade. These schools also have considerably better placement numbers than all other non T-14 schools. People could really be talking about the T14+4, or the T18. It may take a while for WUSTL to crack this group. While WUSTL's score went up a point this year, USC's actually went down one. You can bet dollars to donuts that USC is figuring out why they dropped and doing something to rectify it. But also, perhaps Irvine is already having an effect. The California tuition crisis could also eventually spell trouble for UCLA. I don't think Vandy or Texas are going anywhere soon, though.

For the other golf enthusiasts in the WUSTL camp, I talked to a few buddies of mine who are from St. Louis and members of the golf team at my undergrad. Both said that the Forest Park course, while very short, is a fun and challenging course with a lot of cool holes. They both highly recommended it and said it is pretty reasonably priced. Its right across the street from the school so I plan to play it frequently!

I'm also working on getting the scouting report on other courses in the area (they said Gateway National right across the river in Illinois is an awesome course). I'll keep you posted on what I find.

There really isn't a right or wrong answer here...

WUSTL is the better school, but you still are going to have to do extremely well to get big law in NYC. If you really don't want to leave NY, then don't. However, you can get back there after WUSTL if you wish.

lol....that sucks....i think cardozo's numbers for nlj and clerkships is ~20% while wustl's is at ~30%. i think lowered overall placement is acceptable considering you without a doubt want to work in nyc. i would probably take cardozo in your situation. it just seems like the barrier to gaining nyc employment would be lower coming out of cardozo.

This is probably true. You guys have swung me over into the Cardozo camp. If it's for sure New York, Cardozo is probably better. It's really a situation of you can't go wrong either way, though. I just have a Midwest bias.

Midwest for sure. Preferred cities are St. Louis, Chicago, and Indianapolis (in that order).

Not sure. Atlanta, Nashville, St. Louis, maybe NY or DC if I somehow end up high enough in the class to have a shot at one of the Vault firms. Looks like St. Louis is the most likely option, since I'm turning down Vandy and Emory :?

DeanBigBrother, here is how I see it... WUSTL gives you a better shot at a job (and a good paying one, at that), but less of a shot at getting to NYC. Cardozo will give you a much higher likelihood of NYC, but if you don't do well in your class, you are likely screwed in a big way.

So its really a high risk/high reward kind of thing if you go to 'Dozo. Although in this economy, just about every school will have some risk involved.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
