Just as an FYI, the Regal Downtown movie theater validates parking. I spent the entire year paying for parking because I didn't realize that. As another FYI, the mediterranean place downtown is quite delicious but still markedly inferior to Basil when you take into account that it's about 50% more expensive.

If you're not aware, a lot of places downtown validate parking.

Also the price vs. quality issue is unfortunately fairly prevalent in my opinion at Downtown restaurants.

Best places downtown - Fleurie, Hamilton's, Bizou, and C&O . . . the Upstairs isn't bad either.

I was unimpressed by Hamilton's.

Cable Internet (DSL not available): $53 (this varies by +/- $5 depending because Comcast is incompetent/schizophrenic)

that sounds like ass. do we just call up comcast when we move in and tell them to come install internet in the apt?

Yup. They're the only high-speed Internet option other than the free wireless. You can also get cable TV from them if you so desire (a basic package with Internet service shouldn't be fairly expensive, but I wouldn't know). If you're moving in during the first couple weeks of August, I'd try and get the installation appointment worked out in advance.

My monthly budget reflects expenses for both myself and my husband, but even if it was cut in half, we apparently spend much more than YC.

-Rent $820
-Water ~$65
-Electricity ~$100
-Cell phone $140
-Cable TV & Internet $80
-Netflix $10
-TiVo $10 (although we pay for this annually)
-Groceries $700 (we buy high-quality food & my husband cooks almost every night, so if you're going the Ramen route, this could be much lower)
-Fast food, restaurants, & dining hall $200
-Bars, cabs, & alcohol $200 (to be fair, this includes my costume budget for Feb Club, and we host a lot of parties, so this may be higher than most)
-Laundry $50 (in quarters...I know the bank teller quite well by now)

Other expenses include personal services (like hair cuts & waxing), medical expenses (insurance, but also co-pays for specialists & prescriptions), gifts (so I don't feel worthless when birthdays & holidays come around), and auto insurance & auto maintenance. Gas costs should be very low, unless you travel quite a bit, just because Charlottesville isn't a huge city to navigate.

On a related note, be sure to check with your bank, auto insurer, and cell phone provider to find out if they offer discounts to students. I know AT&T, for example, has a 15 or 20% discount for UVA students.

Unrelated to budgeting, but I just talked to financial aid (finally, the line has been busy all morning!) regarding entrance loan counseling and thought I'd offer some reassurance to others whose status is still "incomplete"--I completed mine as of June 28th and was told it was still too early for it to have been processed by the University and not to worry about it...

If I say, "Because I'm 32 years old, a husband, and a father, and therefore know what budgeting in the real world is like," it's gonna sound condescending. Seriously, though, most people simply can't afford to spend that kind of money on groceries. It's cool that it's a priority for you. Seems more sound than blowing it on a status symbol car.

There's one right off of Copeley field.

From what I recall, those are fairly shitty, though I can't say I've ever really thought about it when I was at Copeley. They have some on the other side of Emmet St from the undergrad bookstore that I assume are open to whoever wants to use them.

Ahh... I'm not representative of the average 1L. I've got to take out enough for two people to live off of until my gf find's a job. Then I'm riding the gravy train straight to Less Debt Station 2L and 3L.

This is important. We need to discuss it, people. I must apologize in advance to all those who will be my teammates, I'm only 5'11 and 3/4".

And is anyone interested in playing some soccer? I've been playing with the 1st and 2nd graders are work and realized I miss it.

$200 food (can sometimes be higher, and every now-and-then, lower... I don't skimp on food though... you can definitely do it cheaper.

srsly? do you mainly just make your own food at home? or maybe i just eat like a pig, but that seems ridiculously low
