I was standing in line at the post office today to send in my reimbursement form, and some guy was like, "Hey are you going to Wash U law school?" I was kinda surprised, but I guess he saw the sheet I was holding in my hand. Turns out he is a judge here in town and a WUSTL law alumnus. We had a nice chat and gave me his card.

Dunno why I'm sharing that with you guys, but I just thought it was cool. Seems like I've been meeting a lot of WUSTL alumni lately. Always fun to run into law school alumni and build that networking base!

Great... Romo's already got his first summer sewed up. Thanks for not even giving the rest of us a chance, geez. (Kidding, of course... Nice to see that the network is already working for you.)

Yes, I'm an IL resident.

And yeah haha, I do actually have some decent options for my 1L summer. I definitely don't have many connections to the legal world (especially in terms of hooking me up post-graduation), but my dad's best friend growing up is the state's attorney in my home county, and I've made a few connections with some judges and such. I'm definitely holding onto every business card I'm given!

As of right now YOU have just become my best connection to the legal world.

Haha trust me, if I could utilize nepotism I would. Unfortunately, I don't have the requisite connections. I am the first person in my entire family to go to law school. And I have a big family; my dad is one of 7 kids and my mom is one of 6, and each of them has many children. (big Catholic family) Yet I am definitely going to be the first lawyer to come out of the family, and it has definitely garnered some strange looks from the relatives! Now they'll have to watch all the lawyer jokes at the family reunions.

And why did you want to know if I'm from IL?

Nepotism is, like, one of my favorite "ism"s. I also like crony-ism... A lot.

crony-ism works in this situation as well.

I asked if you were in IL because I don't think that would ever happen to me in NY.

I've tried to explain this to a few other people too, but the culture in the midwest is just radically different than most areas of the country. People are just almost universally friendly. I know that sounds corny, but it really is true. Today, for example, I was driving back from the post office and some lady just started a conversation with me at the stoplight. She wasn't some loony old coot or a homeless person either, she was just a nice woman who wanted to say hello and chat for a few moments. That sort of thing is really quite common around here, and these anecdotes of the lady in the car and the judge at the post office just illustrate how nice people are.

Sorry to jump on your corn-wagon here :P , but I have to say the same thing. I am from the Southwest, and have lived for about 2.5 years in the Midwest. There's no denying that the people here are nicer than where I am from. I think that, in general the Midwest gets a bad rap that it largely doesn't deserve...

That, coupled with the fact that I don't literally feel like I am going to burst into flames every time I step outside in July really makes me like this area. I've been all over the country, and still prefer any place that will give me four real live seasons to look forward to.

No you misunderstood. That would happen in NY. But not with WashU. Here it'd happen with U of R but that's it. Does a lot, actually.

that makes sense to me since i'm pretty reactionary. if some random person initiates a conversation speaking about something interesting then i can take it from there, however i don't normally initiate conversations with people i don't know unless they look interesting. it's worked well for me except for that i'm a horrible host.

Nah, I got what you were saying... I just felt like throwin' out a little Midwest love, you know??? :D I'm not even that far from WashU, and I think it would still be more likely to run into another school's peeps than Washington's, so I agree with ya!

+1. Similar situation here. Split between WUSTL and BU. Although a USC and/or UCLA acceptance will definitely muddy it up for me. Very interested in the TLP at WUSTL but also strongly drawn to the health law program at BU. Having lived in SoCal for the duration of my stay in the US so far, I am obviously geographically biased towards the 2 SC schools.

Decisions, decisions.

I think you'll be alright. Seems like most people (including me) are just looking around to start weighing options. They don't even have the roommate survey on the admitted students page yet, which is when I'll probably start really considering places just because for me I think a 3 bedroom would be ideal.

So hopefully the Webster names do come out next week as someone had posted they were going to. Spoke to admissions today and the lady stated that they think it'll be before May 1. At least they are hoping. She didn't give any indication it would be next week, but next week does fall under the "before May 1" blanket.

Campus is beautiful. People there seem nice. The tour guide, when asked if it was competitive, quickly answered, "yes." Then, she realized what she was saying and stated that people are glad to help each other out usually (within their own section at least).

I'm really torn as to where I'll end up, but it's still most likely going to be WUSTL. I just get this feeling that I shouldn't be passing up UVA. (or Duke or Michigan)

Where do you want to be after law school? For me, I picked WUSTL over other schools because this is the area where I want to end up and I'm debt adverse.
I'm glad you liked the campus. Its nice to hear good reviews since I can't visit. :)

Just got back from my visit to Wash U. The campus is beautiful and everyone I met was extremely helpful and informative. Students were candid about their experiences and the atmosphere was relaxed, especially considering that finals are rapidly approaching. Sat in on a criminal law class which was energetic and fun. I was leaning toward Wash U before my visit but after today I might as well send in my second deposit...

+1 to your reasons for picking WUSTL. Those are the same reasons I picked it. I want to stay in this area and keep the debt low.

Who do you call to schedule a campus visit? Admissions? I'm on the hold list, but I'm hoping to eventually get in. I want to visit WUSTL and Illinois, my top two choices. I figure it would be easy enough to fly in and do it on consecutive days.

I'm sure admissions would be where it's at. If not, they'll at least tell you who you do need to talk to.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
