Re: Columbia 2013
I just got my CLS housing assignment for a studio on 116th St. near the law school, which is what I was hoping for. Rent is ~1550/month, and I'm wondering whether I can do better if I go off campus. Does anybody know how ~1550/month compares to market rates for studios in this area? I'm looking to be in a studio south of 116th St./north of 110th/near the law school, so I'm curious about market rates specifically with respect to studios in this geographic range. Does anyone know anything about market rates? Any insight/information would be great. Thanks in advance!

I got a similar offer ($1500 unfurnished) and looked around on CL. Found several places including a nice looking one bedroom on w. 115th for $1400 so it looks like CLS housing is not significantly cheaper than what you can get on your own, if not more expensive. I still played it safe and accepted the offer but if market stays the same I will be moving out as soon as the contract ends.roulette223 wrote:I just got my CLS housing assignment for a studio on 116th St. near the law school, which is what I was hoping for. Does anyone know how long the contract runs and what's the early termination penalty?

Does anyone know if law school housing is non-smoking? I forgot to request that I be placed with a non-smoker and now I am concerned that it may be an issue. I couldn't live with a smoker, just my preference.

Who in their right mind smokes nowadays?CG614 wrote:Does anyone know if law school housing is non-smoking? I forgot to request that I be placed with a non-smoker and now I am concerned that it may be an issue. I couldn't live with a smoker, just my preference.

Apparently, lots of people -
In the United States, an estimated 24.8 million men (23.1 percent) and 21.1 million women (18.3 percent) are smokers. These people are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke. The latest estimates for persons age 18 and older show...*
Among whites, 23.5 percent of men and 20.6 percent of women smoke (2008).
Among blacks, 25.6 percent of men and 17.8 percent of women smoke.
Among Hispanics, 20.7 percent of men and 10.7 percent of women smoke.
9.9 percent of Asian adults smoke.
24.3 percent of American Indian/Alaska Native adults smoke.

I'm a little concerned about this, too. I've had a smoker as a roommate before, and even though she was really considerate and never smoked in our apartment, the smell still bothered me because it managed to get on all our furniture (probably from her clothes). I actually thought about this when I was filling out my app, but I had already put down a few requests and felt bad putting another one.CG614 wrote:Does anyone know if law school housing is non-smoking? Overall, I was surprised by how few questions they asked on the UAH app about roommate preferences. When I was filling mine out for freshman year of UG, they asked questions about every conceivable preference, including sleep schedule & favorite types of music.

These are all good. The first is the best. I got a 2 huge bedroom for 2k per month in the UES with like a 20 minute commute to CLS.

Yay for Hispanic females!Among Hispanics, 20.7 percent of men and 10.7 percent of women smoke.
I couldn't live with a smoker at all. I only had roommates first year and third year of college. None of them smoked.

Yeah, I guess we'll find out soon enough. Any of you e-mail your roommates yet? I did mine, we have a non-furnished place, so we have to figure out what to each bring.jl2032 wrote:Yay for Hispanic females!Among Hispanics, 20.7 percent of men and 10.7 percent of women smoke.

So they sent you your real roommates' names (as opposed to the people who live in your apartment right now)? Still haven't gotten mine yet.CG614 wrote:Yeah, I guess we'll find out soon enough. They sent me my real roommate's name, but sent my roommate the current person's name. So, when I e-mailed him, he was confused. But we figured it out now.
Thanks, it's from BustedTees.com I have the shirt too. Unlike most people, I appreciate a good pun.

Anyone receive a grant and fill out the grant form? I am wondering what to put down for the biographical history. Are you all telling your whole life story?

Not sure they told us to do this yet, but I was perusing the JD Orientation site and found this form.Foozle wrote:What's this? That is a very good deal. Two things though:ubik23 wrote: These are all good. The first is the best. I got a 2 huge bedroom for 2k per month in the UES with like a 20 minute commute to CLS.
-Is it on/near Second Avenue? If so, they are tunneling a subway under your building for the next 3 years.
-There isn't anywhere on the UES that is a 20 minute commute to CLS. I live on the north end of the the UWS and it's a 20 minute commute to CLS, and getting crosstown is a huge bitch.

Re: Columbia 2013
didn't get law school only housing which is like my first priority::(((
But got apartment share with two SIPA students instead.
I'm just wondering anybody knows how risky it is to refuse the offer and to get on to the waitlist?

To add, I ended up mimicking the example they provide for the biography. It's weird writing about yourself in third person. HaDtackpat75 wrote:Thanks. Wait, have people wrapped up their financial aid applications yet or is are we still waiting for something from Columbia vis-a-vis loan information?

They sent us an e-mail about a week ago (May 27th for me) entitled "Applying for 2010-2011 Educational Loans." I haven't gotten around to filling out everything yet, but I think that e-mail contains all of the loan information you'll need.dj_spin wrote:Wait, have people wrapped up their financial aid applications yet or is are we still waiting for something from Columbia vis-a-vis loan information?

Thanks for the link. Re: the grant form, for those who will not be holding employment this summer, can anyone tell me how they filled out the Summer 2010 employment section? It says to specify summer activities if not employed, but are we supposed to do that in the blanks for "employer/position/location" or put N/A for those? If we're to put N/A for those, then where should we be specifying the summer activities?Dtackpat75 wrote:Thanks. Re: Columbia 2013
Hey guys! Quick question - I'm filling out the loan applications, and everything is pretty clear to me except for my Federal Perkins Loan. I think I have to sign an MPN for it, but I can't figure out where to do it. I already completed my MPN for my Stafford loans, and I know how to do the PLUS loan as well, but how the heck do I accept my Perkins Loan? Any help would be much appreciated! I'm probably just being dumb and missing something obvious

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
