I think the answer is yes you probably want to have a car. However if you live close enough to walk and don't mind taking a bus to get food or entertainment (or being a barnacle to a friend who is going there) then I think it is doable to not have car. Not sure what the bus situation is like, but there is a car share program at Duke. $8 an hour 2 hour minimum ($60 a day a think), so that is always an option that is probably cheaper than owning a car.
Buy a car. I cannot emphasize this enough. Learn from my error.
Hmm. Would you be able to elaborate? I sold my car recently before moving across the country, and I really don't want to purchase one until post-1L summer.
If you're coming to admitted students weekend, I suggest you look around at the roads and try and determine if you can get around without one. I thought I could. It got bad starting in about November. Walking/public transit/bikes are all generally fails for one reason or another. Hitching rides sort of semi-works but it's inconvenient and you seem like a leech. I can't add much more other than the fact that it simply sucks to not have a car in Durham.

I had tickets to the Wilco show in Savannah on Thursday night, but I had to sell them because of ASW. Bought the tickets before I got my December LSAT, so didn't think I would get into Duke. Luckily I made all my money back on the tickets. Didn't even think to try and get tickets for the show Saturday.

Anyone check out that De Novo website? What a wonderful idea, thank you whoever created that!

I checked out that Alexan Garrett Farms apartment complex listed on the website and it looks amazing. I am a sucker for newly constructed buildings. $1150 for a 2 bedroom, but too bad I would probably fail if I had a roommate lol.

speaking of a roommate... is anyone looking for one? I am looking for another 1L, preferably female, to share a room with. i would like to live a walkable distance from the school, so likely looking at renting a 2BR in the belmont or erwin terrace. if anyone is interested, PM me and we can talk about the details.

I have my enrollment deposit in an envelope. I think I'm going to sleep on it and then send it in the mail tomorrow.

Any suggestions for cheap but not too sketchy hotels to stay in for ASW?

I am staying at the Comfort Inn University, $120 for 3 nights I think.

Has anyone noticed the communication blitz that has been going on at Duke or the past week? They have been by far the school which has kept in touch the most, but this week I have been especially overloaded with communications from Duke or their representatives. Got a new mailing about random stuff like student organizations and clinics, got contacted by a c/o 2010 from UT, another c/o 2010 who will be giving tours during the ASD, the De Novo website, and just a whole bunch of other stuff. Is this there last big push to win me over? Anyone else been getting a lot of contacts?

Yes. Lots of communication. It's definitely nice, especially given the fact that it's usually relevant and helpful.

That's so baller. I've got one more ASW after this one then I'll probably be ready to mail a deposit.

I'll make sure to review the concert for you.

I think I'm going to spend ASW having speed-date conversations with everyone I meet trying to find a roommate, and then blindly accuse the people I talk to of being personalities on TLS

I would have no idea how to out you unless you look like Larry David.

We should probably all just meet up and have an outing party.
