As with most things- if your bike is not the least protected and not the most expensive, it will likely be fine. I have never had an issue, nor heard of anyone having an issue with locking his or her bike in front of Boalt as long as it was properly locked.
Just be careful not to overtorque some brands. My first attempt at locking skewers (on the very cheap end of the spectrum...~$20) ended tragically when I said to myself if tight is good, tighter must be better and I stripped out the skewer. Glad I experimented on my wife's bike first!!

Does anyone know if there is a way to get early access to campus facilities--specifically, the gym? I am arriving next week and would like to be able to workout for the 2 weeks + before classses begin.

As the Boalt resident gym rat, I can answer this. You have to pay 10 bucks for the summer membership, and then pay 10 again for fall. However, if you feel 10 extra dollars is worth it for 2 weeks gym access (like I did), it is possible. Just go to the window outside RSF.
Well worth it. Thanks, Amy. Helpful as always.

Laaaamesauce. They must have changed the rules this year. I went by the gym today and they told me I could not have gym access until August 10th. I told them that I wanted to pay $10 for the summer session and then $10 more for fall; but they said that, since I am not currently enrolled in any classes, I am not eligible for the $10 summer session deal. They then told me I could pay $99 for the next two weeks

Yeah, it was definitely different last year. You mentioned you were starting as a law student in the fall, right?
Yep-multiple times. I wonder, were you a student at Cal previously? She told me that had I been a Cal student the prior semester, I could do it, but since I am not enrolled until the fall, I can not get a $10 membership until then. August 10 was the date she gave me.

24 hour fitness will give you a free 7-day pass.
Here's the one on Addison:

Here's the one on Solano:

Because there are 2 Berkeley locations, use two 7-day passes and that should get you through to Aug. 10th!

I (and I assume everyone else) got an orientation email from Dean Tom this afternoon. (Apparently, the admissions office runs orientation.) It seems clear that we just show up between 8:30 and 9:30 on August 12th. I don't think you need to do anything special to prepare for orientation. The main point of orientation is to prepare us for the start of classes on the 16th.

Go to the picnic anyway. Most people don't have families there.

Just fyi on the RSF issue, I am assuming everyone got the "we registered you for a placeholder course" email recently, and once that happens you are able to pay the $10 fee for the RSF that will go through August 17th or whenever. So if you don't want to drive to 24 Hour, that's now an option.

Everyone I know has the "EFT not active" message. But if you call (or go to the office), they can confirm that it is active. You can also tell that they have the information because once you click on activate again (as if you're going to enter the bank info again)... surprise! your bank info is already there.

It was mentioned today during the fin. aid discussion that EFT status is one of the glitches in their new system.

Does anyone out here still need housing? I have a room to rent in a big 2 bedroom right next to campus. Let me know if anyone's interested in hearing more.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
