About 90% sure I've settled on the 13" MBP. Now here is the question: Purchase from the Apple Store with my friend's 15% employee discount or from UVA? Is the 3 years of AppleCare really worth it? I mean, I thought the whole point in getting a Mac was because "they just work".

Just the person I was hoping would answer. I sort of figured ^that might be the case though. I'm already taking on $60k in loans, what's another few hundred bucks, right?YCrevolution wrote:They don't "just work" and I'm pretty sure most of their parts for many of their models come from the same factories as where Dell and HP get theirs (Foxcomm, for instance). When you get to the $180k mark is when $$$ doesn't matter. At this point, I just plan on making it rain at Three.

Does any plan, or has anyone before driven from the West Coast to the East? I'm thinking about it, but it is a 2800 mile journey and I wouldn't leave until the last week of July, which would make it up to a 10-day journey. Although it might be fun, I'm a little concerned that it might leave me a little exhausted seeing that I'd have to get set up in C'Ville in 2 weeks time before classes start.

Sounds like fun. Had I gone to UCLA I was planning to do the same thing, East to West. Two weeks seem like enough time to get settled and recuperate.whattodo2008 wrote:Does any plan, or has anyone before driven from the West Coast to the East? I'm going from Utah, and it''ll take me a week, but only because I want to turn it into a mini-vacation seeing stuff on the way. Why is it gonna take you ten days?whattodo2008 wrote:Does any plan, or has anyone before driven from the West Coast to the East? I just did Dallas to DC in 2 days, you shouldn't be too exhausted doing west coast to C'Ville in 10.whattodo2008 wrote:Does any plan, or has anyone before driven from the West Coast to the East? 10? If you drive 8 hours a day you should be able to do it in 5-6.joemoviebuff wrote:I'm going from Utah, and it''ll take me a week, but only because I want to turn it into a mini-vacation seeing stuff on the way. Personally, if you don't plan on doing much else you could probably beat that 8 hours per day considerably, do like 10-12. My grandfather is the king of the motor-home family vacation, I've seen the guy do plenty of 11/12 hour days, and still does (although, its a minivan now).

Re: UVA Class of 2013
I'm going to make the drive from Seattle starting Aug. 1st. I'm going to take 10 days too, but that's because I plan to spend a good 5-6 days at my parents house in the midwest. I'm not sure if I can make very good time on the drive since U-Haul says the recommend max speed for their trailers is 55 mph. Anyone have experience with that?whattodo2008 wrote:Does any plan, or has anyone before driven from the West Coast to the East? I'm driving my own car, just pulling a U-Haul trailer. I've heard a lot of horror stories about their trucks though. I hope the trailer works out.YCrevolution wrote:Make sure you get a U-Haul that has working brakes and transmission. Fun fact: After finals, the 1Ls usually rent it out and they black out the windows. Literally finals will end at noon, and the 1Ls will be there drinking within an hour. Now that's a special memory from my first year of law school.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
