All or almost all of lecture classrooms in Slaughter do have plugs for basically everyone in the room (under the desk).

About half of your 1L professors will forbid you from using laptops in class.

Well that sucks. Here I was thinking I was done with paper/pencil notes forever.YCrevolution wrote:Some do, some don't. Lecture classrooms in Withers-Brown do, the ones in Slaughter don't always.jdavid901 wrote:Do the classrooms have power outlets near the seats where you can plug in your laptop?

Fun fact: I was talking to my neighbor, a Virginia Law alumnus, and his mouth dropped open when I told him how much tuition was. Out of state tuition when he was there nine years ago? 21,000 a year ha ha.

If you don't buy your laptop from UVA, how difficult is it to get your computer hooked up to the central repository they describe on the website? What about the antivirus protection, Microsoft Office, etc.? Sorry for asking so many questions I've just been looking to buy a laptop and I'm trying to figure out if the computing bundle is my best bet or if I can buy it elsewhere & add the rest of that stuff when I get out there and still have everything I need.

All of that stuff is easy. There are only two factors to consider in deciding whether to do a bundle:michstudent10 wrote:If you don't buy your laptop from UVA, how difficult is it to get your computer hooked up to the central repository they describe on the website? 1) price
2) how you value the security of being able to get a loaner on the spot, etc.

Re: UVA Class of 2013
I don't think we have seen the bundle offer for this year yet though. Just to be clear, I think that the link that was posted earlier is somehow last year's offer. If you go to http://www.uvastudentcomputers.com/ the law school tab still says "coming mid-May".YCrevolution wrote:You can download Norton Symantec for free if you're a UVA student. You can also get a copy of MS Office for $10 at the main campus bookstore (and the law school bookstore when they have them in stock). If you arrive early (or even if you don't), you can visit the law school's ITC and they'll get you'll all set up to go on your laptop and the university network.michstudent10 wrote:If you don't buy your laptop from UVA, how difficult is it to get your computer hooked up to the central repository they describe on the website? Easy. Also, I may just be channeling my chaotic nerd side but I've never seen a computer bundle worth buying. Bundle is usually synonymous with "charge you a premium for things you don't really need."michstudent10 wrote:If you don't buy your laptop from UVA, how difficult is it to get your computer hooked up to the central repository they describe on the website? Thanks guys, that was really helpful - they just throw so much information at you at once, its nice to get current students' perspectives sometimes. Looks like no computer bundle for me!Kohinoor wrote:Easy. Also, I may just be channeling my chaotic nerd side but I've never seen a computer bundle worth buying. Re: UVA Class of 2013
Going along on the topic of the laptop bundle, do a lot of students have a laptop that isn't part of one? I'm hesitant to switch to a Mac, but if I'm going to get a PC I would greatly prefer a Thinkpad to a Dell. Is the only reason not to do this the cost of having to send it away and paying for repairs, should it break?

Re: UVA Class of 2013
Not the direct cost; you're paying for that cost in the premium that they charge you for the bundle. The reason to not do the bundle would be for inconvenience/hassle of mailing your laptop away and not having access to one for several weeks.5ky wrote:Going along on the topic of the laptop bundle, do a lot of students have a laptop that isn't part of one? I'm really just going for a fast computer with lots of memory and a comfortable keyboard that is easy for me to type quickly.

Re: UVA Class of 2013
Random Housing Question: Anyone familiar with the parking situation (or lack thereof) at the Graduate Centre? The person I am in contact with has said that parking is "first come, first serve" each time someone leaves the property, which makes me extremely nervous. Any advice? I will definitely have a car with me next year.
Thanks!
Thanks!
