I'm an alternate as well. I was 99% sure I would receive nothing (my parent's make a lot of money) but they really do take into consideration of various expenses and the fact that my parents aren't paying for my school. I was pretty shocked because it's a pretty sizable grant. So don't be discouraged!starrydecisus wrote:That's awesome! I'm sure it's really helpful. Re: GULC c/o 2013
For you guys that say your scholarship alternates did you get this email:
Congratulations again on your recent admission to Georgetown Law! I am writing to you on behalf of Dean Cornblatt who asked me to reach out regarding the scholarship process at Georgetown. The Scholarship Committee would very much like to consider you for merit-based funding, if you are interested.
At this time, the Scholarship Committee has already extended some initial awards, and responses to these awards are due back beginning on April 1st. Responses to our initial award offers will let us know how much additional funding we have to extend. If you are interested in being considered for funding, please respond to this email and we will promise to get back to you with an update by April 8th, at the latest.
Do you guys think we have a good shot? Did they tell this to a lot of people?

I asked to be considered, so I didn't think I had a shot anyway. They never sent me one of those. However, after shooting them an email saying what I got from another school and then just letting them know what I've been up to as an update, they told me I was an alternate. Probably means I get zip.mrm2083 wrote:For you guys that say your scholarship alternates did you get this email:

I think I sent everything in like March 3rd or something.MSPeast wrote:How long before the deadline did you get everything in?Kim617 wrote:I had all my financial aid stuff in before the march 8th deadline and I got my financial aid award in the mail today. I'm really hoping for the grant since my mom worked at a really low-paying job until September or so. I might not be able to get it every year, but anything helps.
I'm pretty sure that if I got something, then everyone who is on the fence will. I was absolutely flabbergasted. For undergrad, I think they gave me like $125 in financial aid. Fafsa like laughed in my face for undergrad. I was not expecting a grant at all. I wish I could have a picture of what my face must've look liked when I opened it.

Re: GULC c/o 2013
I think you should know pretty soon, I don't think that one day matters. The financial aid guy said they are really in a faster mode now trying to get everyone's file done.MSPeast wrote:FAFSA was always pretty nice to me for undergrad too, except for senior year when I sent the FAFSA in very late and only got 1/4 as much as normal and had to take out loans that year (the bulk of everything was scholarships, so I was basically applying for living expenses).
Well, I think I sent my FAFSA around January 20th, my NeedAccess and Yellow Sheet on February 28th, and finally mailed off the Business supplement form (my dad's employment is technically structured as a "business" but he's really just a de facto employee of a company - so he's officially a "contractor") on about March 5th or 6th. It's possible that GULC didn't get that form in the mail until March 9th or so; I hope the potential of that form showing up on March 9th doesn't affect it too much, and, more importantly, I simply hope my aid package shows up pretty soon.
That D.C. blizzard definitely did me some favors, though.

Re: GULC c/o 2013
Yea the form says April 30th, but deadline's section says May 3rd. I would get it mailed in two weeks or so..MSPeast wrote:I'm at the point where I'm already starting to deal with things like sending my official transcripts and dean's certification, even though I'm not 100% committed to GULC yet (but it's up there - I even bought a SmarTrip card for the Metro over ASW so I'm pretty sure), mainly because my undergrad can be "red-tapey" at times. I think the transcript request is all online and easy, but the dean's certification might be goofy. These are due May 1st, or 3rd (I had a hard time telling which).

Does everyone need to mail a Dean's cert form? For some reason I can't remember anything about it...MSPeast wrote:I'm at the point where I'm already starting to deal with things like sending my official transcripts and dean's certification, even though I'm not 100% committed to GULC yet (but it's up there - I even bought a SmarTrip card for the Metro over ASW so I'm pretty sure), mainly because my undergrad can be "red-tapey" at times. I am so happy that I see my dean every week, and she's coming to Germany with my team for a competition. That's the one form I don't have to worry about. However, in order to get a transcript, you have fight a fire-breathing dragon and sacrifice your first born. It's like ridiculous.MSPeast wrote:I think the transcript request is all online and easy, but the dean's certification might be goofy.

My school is really good about both. Just have to find the dean which isn't that bad... But you have to have him do it with you standing right there otherwise it won't get done... Transcripts we get like 15 free a year and they are awesome about it.. Same day service always.Kim617 wrote:I am so happy that I see my dean every week, and she's coming to Germany with my team for a competition. That's the one form I don't have to worry about. In the dorm if I have a visitor can they stay the night with me? "This may sound stupid, but I have only ever lived in my own house."

Yeah, definitely. My current undergrad had a limit (2 visitors per week) but my original undergrad was like who cares? One girl had her brazilian boyfriend living with her. I doubt Georgetown cares.Unitas wrote:My school is really good about both. Just have to find the dean which isn't that bad... So...
I'm about to turn down TWO full rides (FSU and Alabama) tomorrow to come to Georgetown with no scholarship or grant.
Am I crazy?

Truth be told, regardless of what people say, the ranking of your school does make a difference, in my opinion. In my situation, I kind of thought of it like this: this is a degree you'll carry for the rest of your career. Not that FSU and Alabama aren't schools to be proud of, but I think a degree from Georgetown will take you further. That's just my two cents, and sort of the decision I made for myself.

I know how you feel. I did get a small amount of scholarship money from Georgetown, but I just turned down two full rides the other day. It's a lot of money.... but attending Gtown is a special opportunity that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.starrydecisus wrote:So...

Why did our group's name change? It's kinda goofy, and it confused me at 2:57 a.m.
Edit: Realization that it's April 1.
