7:30 PM: Bus tour of DC

7:30 PM: Gewirz Welcome Reception (at the Clock Tower)
8:00 PM: Luau (somewhere on campus)
8/23
Noon: "Gewirz Great Race"
6:00 PM: Cubs @ Nationals baseball game


P.S.: Is anyone else posting from their hotel rooms, alone, all alone? I guess I should just relax considering having to move-in tomorrow.

Oh, right, I forgot that the 8 PM night out in DC on Tuesday was a Gewirz thing. The only conflict I have with the schedule is that I can't do the neighborhood tours at noon that day since that's when my service project is.

Are there a bunch of crazy pink plants on the wallpaper? It feels a bit like some French hotels I've stayed at.

I'm off to bed also, mostly so I can get errands done in the morning before I have to head over to Gewirz.

I went to Yoga on campus today. The gym is nice, it makes me super happy. Best part - each locker room has a hot tub and a machine that removes the water from your swimsuit.

WHAT? I WANT THIS NOW.

I should have gone after I picked up my GOCard. But I needed a three-hour nap.

Hmm, things are expensive here. Who knew? (As I'm replying to the girl from NYC who is probably enjoying the bargains of DC...)

It's cheaper, for sure. Groceries especially. But other food too. I had a cheeseburger on U street for 9.50. It would have been 14 in NYC.

Also, this thread is win. Wish you all luck moving in tomorrow.

I'm fine with food being expensive, actually. I want to lose weight. My mom had been feeding me entire pizzas at home, and lunch during my workdays would average around $7. Too easy to gain weight back home.

So I have a couple quick questions about the financial aid. Has anyone heard about when we can submit requests for increase in GradPLUS loans for rent, laptop, etc? (The laptop increase states that it has to be purchased during the academic year which has been defined as starting September 1) Also, do we have to wait until that is approved/denied to request the refund of this semesters loans or can we get what they currently have listed now and then they'll give increase amount if they approve it in a week or two?

I'll probably be calling the FA office on these questions anyway, but just curious if anyone else has researched these questions.

"You can purchase the labtop now and it will qualify for a budget adjustment. Please note that we will begin to accept budget adjustment forms after the add/drop period. The budget adjustment form will be available on the first day of classes.

One more thing. I've found out - due to my poor poor legs - that there is a big mosquito problem here in DC this summer. I have something like 8 bites below the knee. Once I googled about this, I found out that it's a prevalent problem. Doesn't seem to happen in VA or MD, just here in swamp proper. So stock up on repellant or start eating tons of garlic.

Are you in a standard bedroom? I found an ethernet jack (I think) in the living area, but I can't find one in my room (could be behind the bed, who knows). But you have to buy your own cord. The wi-fi signal seems to be pretty good here so I'll just use that.

Yes! (That's my local Target, too, my apartment is only a couple blocks from there.)

I'd also like to point out something I discovered when I moved up here, that might be helpful for anybody else who is moving in from the suburbs somewhere - you can get groceries delivered from a place called Safeway! Very reasonable delivery prices, too. As low as $6 and change in some cases for the entire delivery. You wouldn't want to get produce or fresh meat this way of course (you'd want to pick those out yourself), but for large/bulky items (multiple 12-packs of soda) that you don't want to carry back it's a lifesaver.
