Re: Richmond Class of 2013
got the call last night while drinking guiness for st. patrick's day. first acceptance. cannot even express my excitement.
didn't know much about richmond until i got a fee waiver. applied. have been researching like crazy since acceptance and it's fast becoming one of my top choices (outside canada). i am in love with their progressive approach to education and infusion of technology. very interested in intellectual property law.
here's hoping for some scholarship $$.
162 / 2.78

I visited and loved it. The only downside is the ranking. everything else is great

is the ranking really that much of an issue? considering all of richmond's upsides, and they are abundant, i really don't think so. i understand the mentality on TLS is to judge rankings above all else, but there's a lot more to it than that.

I misspoke. My main concern is job prospects afterward, especially in other markets besides Virginia.dibs wrote:is the ranking really that much of an issue? considering all of richmond's upsides, and they are abundant, i really don't think so. i understand the mentality on TLS is to judge rankings above all else, but there's a lot more to it than that.
Does anyone know if the Marshall Scholars program is well known outside of the school?

Re: Richmond Class of 2013
Sorry to reply so late, but yeah, pretty cool that the dean texts! I also was not sure of texting-law-school-deans etiquette, so I sat back and waited for her to call again.
I was offered $10k each year, which was more than what I expected (164/freaking2.8 ), but with the financial aid info I received today, I'm going to be trying to negotiate a little bit more....somehow. I'm going up to Richmond next weekend to look around the campus and to scope out the housing situation (as well as the nightlife, if time permits). Does anyone have any suggestions? Or suggestions for message boards to find roommates?

i have very similar numbers, traceface (162 / 2.
. when i talked to dean rahman last week she said she expects i'll get something like $10k. looks like that is bang on. she said my GPA will hurt me, so i'm not sure how much negotiating i can do.

ah ok. yeah i don't like the idea of negotiating scholarships. sure it works for some people, a modest few, but it is bad form. never look a gift horse in the mouth, they say. in business if you are offered something for nothing then you don't throw it back in their face.mailmanstalker wrote:Sorry mistype! They said in person at admissions that they do NOT negotiate but they already gave me a generous scholly so that may be why....also I did not speak with Dean Rahman, it was another associate dean

yeah, it makes it very hard to not consider. if i get some sizable scholarships elsewhere i might have to pursue that route.

Yeah, I kind of misspoke... I didn't mean negotiate the scholarships, but see if there's more opportunity for federal loans than what they're offering me. It could be absolutely impossible, I've had the fortune not to deal with student loans yet. I figure I'll schedule a meeting with a financial aid officer while I'm there... it's not like they're going to rescind their scholarship offer just because I express my concerns about being able to finance law school, right?

Re: Richmond Class of 2013
we hope not, at least.
got my scholarship email last night. very disappointed with $5k/year. richmond remains my #1 choice, but financing the tuition is giving me grief. i see that hofstra's scholarship letter was sent out yesterday. i'm hoping it's a biggie, like $20,000, so that i can send it to richmond and say "you are my #1 choice, but $45,000 difference in debt over 3 years is huge. do something please".

Yuck, it's always disappointing to get less than what you expect. That's why I had quite low expectations for getting any kind of money offered. =)
Not a bad idea to leverage money from another school! I got offered $20k each year from Charlotte Law (I applied basically everywhere in N.C. except Dook, Elon and Central), but somehow I don't think Richmond will take much stock in me trying to leverage that...

Re: Richmond Class of 2013
it's hard to say and it disagrees with my principles; however, when you make a $150,000 investment you have to be fickle. i really want to go to richmond (if i go to the US), but i can't go for sticker less $15,000. especially if i have other options which are far less expensive. it will be less of a negotiation and more of a request.traceface wrote:Yuck, it's always disappointing to get less than what you expect. I am strongly considering Richmond, as I am being offered a pretty sweet scholarship.
Who is pretty sure they will attend Richmond next year?
Has anyone been offered the John Marshall scholarship?

hard to say, kat. LSN is showing very little acceptances below 160, and those who have been accepted are URM.
however, with the second round of applications coming (probably) i would suspect your chances are decent. hard to say.

I have 158/3.15/waitlisted and I applied in November. They seem so optimistic in their waitlist letter though so maybe they will have spots open up soon. Good luck!katryn wrote:Hey what are my chances of getting in here?? (156/3.5)

They said after the April 15th deadline. There is a priority waitlist as well though that I am not on, so I may just withdraw.katryn wrote:I appreciate the hope guys
