Re: Duke Class of 2013
As someone turning down NYU myself, I asked: do I want to live in NYC now or after graduation? Am I interested in public interest?
NYU does have an absolutely amazing faculty though.

I'm personally choosing between NYU, Duke, and Texas... how well does NYU place outside of NYC? I think NYC would be great, but I don't want to live there after law school; at least I don't think I do.

Re: Duke Class of 2013
That is a loaded question. Obviously a lot of students from NYU self select to stay in the city, because that's where legal jobs are located. Its not as if you're trapped in the city though, NYU is a phenomenal school and employers from all over recognize that.louboutin wrote:I'm personally choosing between NYU, Duke, and Texas... how well does NYU place outside of NYC? If you go to Duke, just don't try to go back to Texas. In 2008 just 12 people did that, and I think we have already reached the quota on people wanting to work in Texas.louboutin wrote:I'm personally choosing between NYU, Duke, and Texas... how well does NYU place outside of NYC? Re: Duke Class of 2013
Hi Everyone,
I just returned from Durham last night. I am a summer starter in the combined JD/ LLM Program in International and Comparative Law. I'm from Connecticut. Over the past two days, I visited about 10 plus apartment complexes in the Durham area. I would highly not recommend Pinnacle Ridge. They apartments are very dated. While the leasing office says that they keep their prices competitive, I found that there are other much nicer places for around the same price. It's also not that close to school and you would need to drive to get there. In fact, it seems that most places where grad students live are a few miles from campus.
I found a really nice apartment complex called Independence Park. It's 7 miles from the complex to the law school parking lot and the drive takes about 11 minutes. The complex was build last year and they will be opening their last two buildings in time for us to move in. The bedrooms are the biggest I saw and if you request an apartment with a sunroom rather than a porch, it makes for a good space for desks. They offer all-inclusive packages that include: cable tv, electricity (this will be your heat and ac since Durham is electric heat), water, and trash. It also includes a washer and dryer. The only other expense would be internet for around 49.00. For a 2 bedroom 2 bath its about 1100 for everything included. If you would rather not have an all inclusive package, it's around 850ish. The community looks to be very nice, new, and well kept. If you tell them you are going to be a student at Duke Law, they will give you discounts off the application fees. The website is: http://www.independenceparkapartments.com/ I encourage you to check it out! There are a ton of places in Durham and they all have very similar layouts. I found that these apartments were the best value for the money.
I am going to be moving down around mid May and am looking for a roommate to move in sometime in May or June. If you are interested please email me at: syoung06@gmail.com
Thanks,
Spencer

Re: Duke Class of 2013
Hmm so that would be around or slightly less than $600 a month between two people with internet/ all utilities included. That all inclusive package, does it have a cap on electricity or water or anything? My apartment I'm currently at includes electricity and water with no cap, but I know of a couple other people who have a package deal but if they spend more than say, $40 on electricity, they have to pay the difference between the cost and their electricity cap.
If its unlimited that sounds like a great deal, I do love not having to worry about air conditioning costs during the summer here and I imagine in Durham it gets comparably hot.

No cap on the all-inclusive. They said that water cost normally about 25 a month for a 2 bedroom and electricity costs from 60-100. With the washer and dryer and cable included, I think it makes sense to get the package and just not have to worry about it.
You should definitely check it out when you visit.
Everyone said that it gets quite hot in Durham during the summer. Yesterday, it was colder in Durham than in CT. Apparently, this winter was their coldest in 50 years.

If that's the case I think you sold me on these apartments. Its really convenient to do it this way, and I'm not worried about a ten minute drive to campus. I'm coming in my old reliable car. If I was starting in the summer I'd email you about rooming together but alas I'm trapped until August.Syoung wrote:No cap on the all-inclusive. Interesting place, and I agree that all bills paid is the best thing to do with roommates. This might be a place I go checkout when I visit. So your complaint about Pinnacle Ridge was that the units were old? Anyone else have any experience inside one of the units? I wish the ASD event was on Saturday so on Friday I could try to get tours of all these apartments.

The ASD tour thing? I was talking about going to some of these apartments I am looking at and go through a unit. Not sure which apartments they will take us to on Saturday, but I will still be there lol. Still not sure if I would want a roommate though, as I would die if they did better than me lol.someones alt wrote:On Saturday they do apartment tours.Jericwithers wrote:Interesting place, and I agree that all bills paid is the best thing to do with roommates. I'm pretty sure you can get a tour on a Saturday. Most offices are open then. I know my current complex does them every day.

Yes but having a roommate means you can hide his books and tear pages out of his E&E's.
