Rubenstein is awesome. Hands down the best CivPro prof at the school.
Looks like we're in the same section, BlueCivic :) Just thought I'd share this. A rising 2L gave me her opinion on these professors!
A great friend wrote:Suk is supposed to be fab. She's the other half of HLS's rock star couple (along with Noah Feldman). No laptops for notes in her class, but she's supposedly good enough to make that OK. You are DAMN LUCKY to have Rubenstein because he is, by far, the best Civ Pro instructor at HLS. Simply amazing. His Civ Pro final is in-class and seems intense (to me, because I can't imagine only 3 hours for a Civ Pro final), but you will learn the material, no doubt. Randall Kennedy = ♥ ♥ ♥ He's so, so nice and (obvs) brilliant. You'll love him.

Benkler is sort of a dud. I had him last year. The good thing is that you will probably only get called on once in his class, if at all, and it's a great place to do any online shopping....He’s really a hot mess professor. There were days I didn’t take a bit of notes. We would have epic gchats of 40+ people going on. I pretty rarely paid attention. I didn’t find class useful. However, I read the book and read a Gilbert on Property supplement and still got an H. I found Benkler to be pretty fair with regard to exam grading. He doesn’t really talk about exams very much in his class, except to say that he: 1) designs the exam to be finished in 3.5-4 hours, but gives you an 8 hour time block as a take home so it’s not a typing contest and gives you time to think/be more thoughtful about your answers, 2) doesn’t have a sample correct answer. The model H exams that he showed us varied widely. Past exams are posted online. Not sure exactly where, but you’ll be able to find it when it comes time. DON’T THINK ABOUT LOOKING AT SAMPLE EXAMS UNTIL AT LEAST NOVEMBER.
Hope this helps <3
That's awesome thanks!

Just to confirm I'm not missing anything - - our financial aid process was ridiculously easy, right? We didn't have to do anything besides fill out the Grad Plus forms and send in the MPN? My term bill correctly shows a positive balance, but I got freaked out for a second listening to some friends talk about how arduous the process was.

Did we have to apply for a loan on the Department of Education site, or was it sufficient to have just filled out the grad plus loan on the financial aid website? If I'm not mistaken, yeah we had it pretty easy.

I just followed the links on the fin-aid website. I can't remember if I did anything additional.

It did seem suspiciously easy, but I got what seems to be a "You're all set" e-mail from the financial aid office. I guess it would be more difficult if you were to do all private loans?

What was the "you're all set" email? Can you post a few lines so I can search through and see if I got it too?

Thanks!

so how are most ppl getting their books? once their section is solidified?

for 1L first semester, im a bit wary about getting used textbooks...

...how necessary is it to buy E&E's vs hornbooks, compared to just using the library's?

If you want to use E&Es, it's basically necessary to have your own copy since you'll probably want to do a lot of marking up and refer back to it frequently.

If you want to use hornbooks, it can go either way. The library has all of them and you can scan pages, but they're sometimes checked out.

Hey everyone, a couple other 0L's and I started a fantasy football league on Yahoo. For anyone that's interested: the League ID# is 368940, league name is HLS 2013 and the password is harvard. I set up the draft for next week so we can get it done before everyone gets busy!

thanks objection! do you think its necessary to use E&E's/hornbooks for every class first semester 1L? or are there specific ones you'd recommend (i was thinking like in Arrow's 1L guide)

Hey Objection, thanks for helping out! I was just wondering if there is a big difference between say the 5th (newest) and 4th edition of an E&E?

ive read that for 'static' courses its okay to use 4th editions but for things that change? (like civ pro) then you should get 5th

lol dont ask me which falls under which category, i just remember reading it in some thread haha

Does anyone know if there's a marketplace website for HLS students buying and selling stuff, a craigslist-like website just for HLS? These books, even on Amazon, are pretty pricey.
