At least I know I won't be wearing one (formal dress code is something that private-school has ingrained into my brain).
BTW, just started unpacking and building my target furniture. Let's just say my wrist muscles are on the wrong side of sore.
You can get away with a polo and khakis, but you'll look like a jackass (or the manager of a cell phone kiosk). Under no circumstances should you wear a polo and dress slacks. Don't wear white socks either.
I don't wear my dress shirts business casual, but you can get patterned button-down shirts that work wonderfully and often times look good with a sport coat or blazer. Polo and khakis is a touch more casual than business casual IMO, but I don't think it'll be a big, big deal at orientation since you're not really trying to get a job or anything.
Of course, if you wore this t-shirt and shorts I think that would qualify as business (the shirt) casual (the shorts).
