Got here today, but my stuff's still on the way. Kinda sucks, but I'm excited to be here.

Welcome to Durham! I'm sure Tyler's Tap Room will help you kill the time until your belongings arrive :)

Ha! I actually ate there last time I was here. I'll probably try to swing down there, but I didn't get in today until after 6 local time and was pretty wiped from the 9 hour drive. Got a couple of fold out chairs tonight so I don't have to dwell on the floor continuously until the things get here. Gotta get some more stuff tomorrow and pray that the stuff will be here sooner rather than later.

Hey everyone,

I know this is slightly off-topic since I'm not actually in the Class of 2013 but I posted in the Duke 1L thread and haven't had any luck so I thought I'd try here.

Does anyone have any experience with Duke ED? How quick do they respond to ED applications? Also, does anyone know of any splitters getting into Duke ED? The consensus on this board seems to be that Duke doesn't like splitters and that I should apply ED to UVA instead. I like that idea but I've loved Duke for a long time and am trying to gauge whether I could somehow throw an ED app there first and then apply ED to UVA if it didn't work out but I don't know how long it takes Duke to respond without PT and I'm not sure if I'm going to get it anyways.

Thanks for any insight in advance!

I personally did not apply ED anywhere. However, if you take a look at lawschoolnumbers.com, the statistics show that some EDs to Duke received a response anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Re splitters, I can’t speak from experience, but again check out the statistics at lawschoolnumbers.

In terms of an ED to Duke vs an ED to UVA, the facts indicate that the variances between these 2 law schools are very slim and that for the most part, they hold very similar strategies re numbers.

What could you possibly lose by applying ED to Duke first, giving Duke the opportunity to respond first? If Duke is your first choice and UVA has an extended ED deadline, this seems to be the ideal option for you.
Both law schools are extraordinary. I personally chose Duke over several law schools, including UVA, for many reasons: smaller class size, better odds at getting on a law journal, to name a few. Recently, a 1L at UVA posted that they placed in the top 10% of their class and yet had been unsuccessful at getting onto all 3 of their journal choices.

In case y'all are curious, we got our preliminary segment 1 OCI schedules today. I think the average number of interviews is hovering somewhere around 15, depending on the market you bid for. Since we are a completely lottery school, your number of interviews is really just an indication of what your bid strategy was, not whether any of them are going to result in a job. So take that for what you will.

Thank you for your help. I think you are right. One thing I did notice about lawschoolnumbers is that in the ED pool no one over 170 got rejected. Still, it seems to be a much smaller sample than other schools with ED but it is helpful. That's really interesting about the law journal I didn't know that about the 1L. It will definitely be something to consider moving forward. Ever since I starting thinking of law as a career Duke was definitely a dream school for me. So why give up on that dream right? Thanks again!

Its been statically proven that students who buy used books get significantly worse grades than students who buy new books.

The B&N on Mt. Moriah road is getting a large shipment in of A Civil Action sometime later this week, apparently they got wind that all us 1Ls needed it or something. You should be able to go by and reserve a copy if you're in town.

I told them it was on the Duke law summer reading list. Lol.

B&N has it for over $11. Through Amazon you'll have it in two days for $4 or overnight for $8. Res ipsa loquitur.

There was an earlier discussion re mentors on this thread, and Masochistic and Bosque (Duke Class of 2012) indicated that most incoming 1L students have mentors.

More like good idea or best idea.

Although if you are talking about the student mentoring program set up by Duke, just make sure to talk to more than just the mentor assigned to you. Talk to other students about your questions too. Like me! I am not signed up for the program (even though I am on the DBA Exec board, for some reason I never find out about this stuff until after the deadline), but I am more than willing to talk yours or anyone elses ear off about my opinions of law school and the law in general.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
