We will be cheering for the Tide too, for strength of schedule considerations. However, I cannot wait for revenge in Tuscaloosa. Or the Dome.

Wishing the Duke Law Class of 2012 great success at the OCI coming up in just a few short weeks... especially Masochistic, prez, and Bosque...
Question to Masochistic, Prez, Bosque about OCI:
I read on an employment thread that UVA combines something called "select" (?) along with a lottery as their OCI process. Can you explain the differences and what system does Duke use at OCI?
Thank you.

Of those three books the only one I know you will need it the Bluebook. And you WILL need the Bluebook. It will be the bane of your experience from now until the day you die, but you will need it. Go ahead and buy a copy (and make sure it is the newest version, they came out with a new edition in May).Jericwithers wrote:I just hope to find some way to catch my Texas games. I'll even pay insane pay-per-view prices, I don't care.
I've been browsing the registration system today hoping that our sections would finally be announced and plans can begin to move forward, but nothing so far. Instead I found out theres a couple of books we can purchase now in order to get the best deals before the frenzy starts. I assume that the system is up to date and these are really the books we need, but don't blame me if they happen to be different than the final list of books (I'll be just as angry at myself, don't worry). They all look like standard legal writing class books, so I will be taking the risk and buying them now in order to save some money.
All legal writing classes require at least these 3 books: http://dukebooks.collegestoreonline.com ... ction.0=08
As to the other two, we didn't use either in my legal writing class. I would wait on buying any of the other ones until you get there. You will likely only ever use one.

As far as I know, we just put in our bids, and the lottery system doles out our interviews. I should probably be better informed on this though.paralegal wrote:Wishing the Duke Law Class of 2012 great success at the OCI coming up in just a few short weeks... especially Masochistic, prez, and Bosque...

Re: Duke Class of 2013
From talking to career services folks at Duke it seems like a full lottery system, meaning that you bid and rank firms and get interview slots on a first come, first served basis based on that ranking. Schools that "select" or have pre-screened systems fill interview slots based on employers' GPA cutoffs and resume strength. When you have a mixed system that means that schools fill slots based partly on lottery, partly on GPA; a firm with 40 slots in a 50/50 system gets 20 pre-filled based on grade/law review criteria and then 20 based on the ranked lottery system. This is how I understood the system, anyway. Does that sound correct, Bosque/ObvMas/Prez?prezidentv8 wrote:As far as I know, we just put in our bids, and the lottery system doles out our interviews. That sounds about right, but I am by no means all that knowledgeable about the OCI process. I just know I get to start bidding next week.thickfreakness wrote:From talking to career services folks at Duke it seems like a full lottery system, meaning that you bid and rank firms and get interview slots on a first come, first served basis based on that ranking. Thanks thickfreakness for your comments. I called Career Services yesterday and asked about the OCI process, and you're correct Duke utilizes a 100% lottery system; I know Michigan does as well and many other top law schools. Last year, UVA utilized 50% pre-screened, 50% lottery; and this year UVA is utilizing 80% pre-screened, 20% lottery.thickfreakness wrote:From talking to career services folks at Duke it seems like a full lottery system, meaning that you bid and rank firms and get interview slots on a first come, first served basis based on that ranking. As you said in your prior post, when you bid, you rank firms according to your own strategy; then a computerized lottery system chooses students to fill available interview slots with firms. If a student isn't selected by the lottery system, they are placed on a waiting list. Apparently, firms are given the names and resumes of all of the students who listed them on their bids. The firms may make their own arrangements to schedule an interview with a student on the waitlist independently (during lunch, etc.) based upon that student's GPA/resume.
When a portion of OCI utilizes a pre-screened system, it means that firms are allowed to look at the students' resumes and transcripts (in some cases) beforehand and then pre-select which students (that listed them on their bids) they want to interview based upon GPA cut-offs. The firms fill their own interview slots.

Thanks for the OCI information; I had no idea that they give employers a list of all the student bids and allow the firms to make separate interviews with the ones they want.
I am disappointed that they gave us the wrong information about the DukeCards, though. I want my $6.44 back that I spent mailing them in a passport photo. Guess thats what I get for being overly eager.

Hi quakeroats. My guess is that during orientation we will receive info about Westlaw and Lexis training and individual passwords. Usually, the use of Westlaw and Lexis is restricted to currently enrolled law students who are doing research for academic purposes, so I doubt that you would be permitted to gain access now.quakeroats wrote:Does anyone know when we get access to Westlaw and Lexis and if there's any way to get access now?

Re: Duke Class of 2013
It sounds like you have a good handle on it. In a few days, we get to bid on firms, our bids go into a fancy computer, and the computer spits out our interview list. On a personal note, I hate the lottery system. I really wish Duke did at least a partial pre-screen. I'm not really sure how much a lottery system helps students at or below median.paralegal wrote:Thanks thickfreakness for your comments.
