If anyone is still looking for Durham housing, we've decided to rent our house when we move down to Austin. It's just under 3 miles from the law school, 3 bedrooms/2.5 baths with a fenced-in backyard in a quiet neighborhood with many young professionals and young families (several Duke medical residents and couples who split their time between Duke and UNC live on our street).

Hardwood floors downstairs, tiled kitchen and bathrooms. Right around the corner from Rick's Diner, Foster's Market, Guglehupf Bakery and several other good eats:).

Below is a list I obtained for everyone in the class of 2011 for their summer employment. Although this is not 100% accurate, it is self reported, and I believe close to 100% accurate. No names are given. Hope this helps and I have not run the numbers on what % is V100 etc... in part because I'm a current SA and don't have the time.

...What is most important is that this is the summer list for the class of 2011.... and Duke did very well re biglaw.

Placed well into the V10: Skadden, Sullivan & Cromwell, Simpson Thacher, Cleary, Covington, Kirkland (all highly selective firms).

and placed well into the DC market....which is a very competitive market especially ITE and Duke always places well into DC due to small class size and the Duke in DC Program.....

62-65% of the class got SA gigs at firms.
V10: 11%, V20: 18%, V50: 31%, V100: 39%.

Yup. The VERY first memo you write is a closed universe memo, but I don't think it is a full memo and I KNOW it is not graded. You get a check, check plus, or check minus, but it doesn't count toward your actual grade in the course.

The second one, the one which is graded and due during fall break, is open universe. But don't worry too much about that, your legal writing professor will give you a good idea of which cases you need to include.

And then things accelerate in the spring.

PS-For the unaware: Closed or closed universe and open or open universe refers to the case law available for your memo. In a closed assignment, you are restricted to a set of cases provided for you by the professor. The plus side is that you don't have to do any research, the negative is that you better get comfortable with using and understand every one of those cases.

In an open assignment, you are not given any case law and instead must find what is out there on your own. a negative is this obviously takes longer, but you get to be more creative with your arguments and there is a little more leeway if you leave out a case and use a different but similar one to cover the same ground. Open assignments are what you will be doing for the rest of your life.

Oh, and one final word: if you are like me, you will probably grow to despise legal writing (regardless of the quality of your professor) and worry that you are going to hate practicing law because everyone tells you that is what practicing law is. Don't worry. Writing in the firm setting feels way different, and is much easier for me. Same rules, same everything, (and I still HATE the bluebook) but for some reason who you are doing it for makes all the difference in the world.

John Adams, a 1962 graduate from Duke Law School, eight years after graduation created the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has become a powerful force in environmental litigation and advocacy. He played an instrumental role in writing the "Clean Air and Clean Water Acts." Our 1986 graduate Gao XiQing was Duke Law School’s second Chinese student and the first Chinese resident to pass the New York Bar exam. Today he is the general manager of China’s state investment company, holding over $200 billion in sovereign funds. After graduation, he worked in a law firm on Wall Street for two years and then returned to China in 1988 to teach law in Beijing. He helped to create the legal structure for China’s stock exchanges and later helped to create the Chinese social security system. He is still closely connected to his alma mater and is now a Duke University trustee.

Well, as long as everyone is posting OCI numbers, lets see.

Near as I can tell, Duke currently (not sure if this is the final list) has:

167 Job interviewers
124 Individual employers (although I might have over counted a few, I think some are at both round 1 and 2 of OCI. Lets say around 110 to be safe)

Not sure how many interviews that translates to.

Oh, and in case anyone did not know, our class size is 225 (which is big for Duke).

Wait so how many organizations total including multiple offices at Duke. NALP Directory shows 307 organizations including multiple offices for last year’s OCI for Duke.

I counted 122 individual employers (2 overlaps between round 1 and 2 that I could see). There are about 110 firms, and then some PI and gov't.

I counted about 365 offices (including multiple offices) total, although this could be a little off- the format makes it really tough to count this, so I lost track a few times. About 345 are firms, the rest PI/Gov. Even assuming that some of these firms are non-NALP, it looks like this year is at least marginally better than last year.

I sure hope that materializes into more offers and more Dukies (is this an accepted term?) with jobs coming out of OCI. Even 10-20 more students with good jobs out of OCI would make a pretty big difference on stress levels I think.

You can't get golden guns in the second game, so wheres the fun in staying at the maximum level? That said I'll probably just stick with level 70 once I make it.

Yeah well the AK47 is an absolute own-cannon and I only used it for a day because I did the prestige thing this morning. I think I'm just going to use different guns this time around. Since we are sharing A Song of Ice and Fire(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire) has been my main time wasting enterprise this year. I highly recommend it, It's the best fundamental writing I've ever seen in a fantasy series. The characters and dialog are absolutely fantastic, Tyrion Lannister is the single best character I've ever seen in a fantasy series.
