I'm going to make some calls tomorrow. Still considering:
Alexan Place
Colonial Village
Evergreens
Golden Belt

Will probably end up picking from those depending on availability/pricing.
maybe. FWIW when I met jeric he was creeping on prospective undergrads just trying to tour the campus
Hahaha....haha. You know thats a lie, or else I would have picked a more attractive bunch than the chemistry tour group. My goal is to land someone from the med school anyways.

If your current doctor doesn't have records of your immunizations for UG in your med records (which for me encompassed everything required by Duke) then have your UG fax them to any doctor and they'll fill out the form and give you everything you need on the spot. Fax the form in and you're all done. You don't need to send in your records, the signature is all they require. A couple days later I got an email at my Duke account confirming that I'd met all the requirements.

Agreed re the quick turnaround on the parking pass. 2 days I think it was.

I've read that Duke has been offering research positions on campus to 3Ls who haven't found employment in order to maintain their prized 100% employment stat. Any current students heard of this? I've read so many dismal articles about the Biglaw job market that I've just about convinced myself that I'm pissing away 150k on my law school education. I know Biglaw or bust is a pretty false and misguided premise to work from, but, I don't know, I'm disheartened.

Anyone feel like talking me away from the cliff?
We are all fearful (to some degree) when we look over the edge of the cliff, but the trick is to be prepared for the jump. While biglaw isn't a guarantee, you are still going to an elite legal institution with a network and reputation that allows for the possibility to do whatever you want after graduating. I, personally, look at success as a factor of motivation, dedication, and staying positive. If you can keep those 3 traits while learning the skills of a lawyer then I don't think you will have a problem landing a biglaw job or whatever it is you want. It's a small class and not everyone in the top 40% will want to go to biglaw, so if you perform at the best of your abilities you will surely land the requisite GPA for a biglaw job. You just can't shy away from doing the footwork and networking that is so invaluable to getting hired anywhere (don't just rely on OCI). There will always be people predicting dooms day is upon us, but don't let their negativity stop you from aspiring and working toward your goals.

~50% got NLJ250 jobs in 2009 (109/219 students). That's not bad considering that a substantial portion of the top half of the class is going to go for clerkships/DoJ/smaller boutique firms/etc. Which, if my potentially flawed reasoning is right, means that being around median still gives you a shot at BigLaw (yes, yes I know NLJ250 ≠ BigLaw, but it's a decent rough proxy since there are also firms that pay market that aren't a part of the NLJ250 and Duke places decent numbers into places like TX and CA that some say are underrepresented by the NLJ250)
Was this the class of 2009 or summer associateships for 2Ls (class of 2010)?
A lot of students who secure Biglaw positions are allowed to defer them for a year while they do a clerkship. Firms want people who have seen litigation from a judge's perspective, which clearly helps build a more informed perspective when writing/strategizing. Many large firms will even count your clerkship as a year employed with the firm when calculating milestones for raises. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

I currently work for a boutique litigation firm that specializes in class action suits against major pharmaceutical companies. It is a very complex, intersting and specialized field. There are a TON of advantages to working for a firm like this: flexible hours, a MUCH more relaxed and informal atmosphere, constant and close contact with partners, etc. Associates here are completely integral to the litigation process. First and second year associates write briefs, take depositions, and agrue motions on a regular basis. More menial tasks like document review are delegated to contract attorneys and support staff (I've done a ton of document review here, which is insanely tedious, but was an exciting opportunity for me to do real lawyer work). I'm actually drafting the facts section of a brief right now (procrastinating a bit). So the experience you can get at a boutique firm is really unmatched as far as litigation goes. However, the salaries are a fraction of Biglaw (my guess would be associates start at around 60-80k here), and you have very little mobility within the field once you've committed to this path. After 3-5 years cutting your teeth at Biglaw, your options are pretty much limitless. If all you have on your resume is some substantive but specialized work in a field with a limited scope, you are SOL as far as breaking into new/different fields.

I don't know. Biglaw ===> more specialized field that you are intellectually emotionally engaged in seems like the right path to me (again, for litigation). I guess Duke is a solid first step down that path. I just with it was 5 years ago....

Sorry, guess I'm rambling.

Some impressive stats for Duke…..

Biglaw Vault 10

Wachtell
Cravath
Skadden
Sullivan & Cromwell
Davis Polk
Weil Gotshal
Simpson Thacher
Cleary
Covington
Kirkland

15% of the Class of 2009 at V10 post graduation (class size of 228).

Class of 2009 employed at 9 of those firms (excluding Wachtell – but 2L SA Class of 2010 at Wachtell).

Almost a quarter of that 15% went to Cravath…..that firm hired a lot of Duke grads.

(Note: there are partners from Duke Law at both Wachtell and Cravath).

These are terrific stats re V10, which is the top tier of biglaw and highly selective...

Weird, the class has already been removed from ACES. Guess I'll have to stalk the system much more often to try to get a peek at which section I am in before August.

Dang, they hit me up for my parking permit too.

Jesus, I just looked at the orientation schedule from last year and it made me want to die. so many mandatory funtivities over 5 days. sigh. summer orientation seems a lot better, they crammed 4 days of boring into 2 and then let them start class.

Is any of this optional, or do we all sit through lectures on "computer training" the "duke honor code" and "how to make friends in lawl school"? I get that a lot of people enjoy this type of thing, but I really hope we're allowed to skip out on it and just do the fun things like go to a Bulls game or the community service stuff.

If he ends up doing to Duke, you'll know him at first sight. Seriously.

Planning on signing a lease tomorrow with Alexan (not the farms one, the other one). 4 mile bike ride commute will allow me to not feel guilty whenever I decide to drive.

I just want to get drunk with the guy and see if he chills out a little bit. I'm sure he's a decent person, he obviously was just super-anxious during the ASW.

Meh -- I wasn't at ASW but it sounds like this guy was classic gunner. I think we have to accept that some people in law school (esp. T-14) are completely insane. Just the way it is. Par for the course with the legal profession as well. I don't pay much attention to these people. Think about it, if you're in a recruiting interview, you think a partner is really attracted to some socially awkward toolbag who's obsessed with flaunting his knowledge-base, or someone normal and down to earth like us? We're all smart, but it's the ones who employers can actually envision themselves spending 90 hours a week with that get the jobs.

Just sayin...

To answer your question about which activities are mandatory and which are optional, from last year:

Monday August 17:
Registration & Breakfast
-Yes-ish. You need to show up by the end to get all your stuff, and it would be nice to be able to talk to some of the other students and get something to eat, but you don't need to be there right when it says it starts.

Dean's Welcome
-Yes. Boring, but you should probably go.

Lawyers as Leaders Lecture
-Yes. This will most likely be different, but if I remember correctly this was the first in the "Dean's Lecture Series", which is a class. You have to go to all of them. However, I would be lieing if I told you they take attendance or that everyone remembered to attend all of them.

Where Do You Draw The Line?
-Yes. This is a small group thing, and they will notice if you are not there.

Professionalism Alumni Luncheon
-Yes, but you want to go to this. Free food!

Transfer Student Orientation
-Only if you are a transfer student, which none of you are.

Duke Blueprint and Honor Code
-Yes. Rather important, and I think this is where they pass around the form you have to sign.

Free Time
-Non-event, so you figure it out.

LEAD Fellow Reception
-No, but I think last time they had beer and it was my first opportunity to really interact with the other students on a more casual level. I would pop in if nothing else.

Tuesday, August 18:
Breakfast
-Nope, but if you want free breakfast you can have it.

Public Interest & Pro Bono Primer
-Probably should (I think they also explain how PILF works here), but no one will really notice if you sleep in and miss it.

Screening of 18 Years Lost: The Trials of Darryl Hunt/Q & A with Darryl Hunt
-No, but this was INCREDIBLY interesting. I don't know if they will do it again next year, but whatever they do will most likely be just as cool. I would go.

Community Service Kick-off and “Q Shack” BBQ Lunch
-Yes. Tasty food, and you have to meet up with your group for...

12th Annual Dedicated to Durham
-Big Yes. You get a T-shirt, and nothing helps you get to know your class like 4 hours of work pulling Kudzu out of the gardens (or whatever your service project will be).

Durham Bulls Game
-No. I didn't go. Didn't have time to go to a Bulls game till spring, but it was a blast--although it was more because of who I went with than the actual game. I don't know how fun the game will be when you are there with relative strangers. Still, the people who went last year seemed to have a good time, so if you are feeling up to it go for it.

Wednesday, August 19:
Breakfast
-Again, No. But again, free food.

Building Relationships
-I am 90% sure I slept through this, and I am 90% sure I remember thinking it was the best decision I ever made. Go if you want, but I am pretty sure it was pointless. Maybe ask someone who went's opinion.

Living with Purpose/Living with Purpose Roundtable
-Meh. This was about the Rec policies, Student health, who to go to if/when you are feeling suicidal, things like that. I went to this, and I remember the panelists being unsure as to what the actual Duke policies were with regards to grad students. They mostly handle the undergrads. I think it left us more confused than we were going in, but at least it told us what to be confused about. If you don't go, know that your Duke Id will get you into the gym, and if you look up online for "Healthy Devils" you can find all the health info you need. Sometimes used the first bit of info, never used the second.

Healthy Living Lunch Fair
-Tasty, but the way they had it set up last year was awful. you had to wait in a really long line every time you wanted a mouthful of food. Hopefully they fix this logistically.

While I am on the subject, don't eat at the refractory. They are ok usually, but they charge ridiculous prices. If you don't want to go get free lunch at a lunch event and you didn't bring yours in a sack, I would either head over to the business school or down to the normal student union. The refractory should be your last resort lunch when you have no time for something that is not in the Law School.

Making the Most of Class
-Yes. Go, if only so you can get a feel for what Professor Coleman is like in case you have her for Torts. She is just going to be talking about IRAC (or FIRAC, don't remember which she says). But she usually opens it for questions, and she is incredibly frank and open with her answers.

Legal Analysis, Research and Writing classes
-YES. This is an actual class, so you have to go.

Duke Bar Association ("DBA") Cook-out
-Go. Good food, and you might get to meet my dog. But you don't have to if you don't have a mentor (I forgot to sign up for the program, so I did not).

Thursday, August 20:
Academic Advising
-I honestly don't remember this.

Practice Professionalism
-Again, don't remember. I think I was worried about Legal Writing at the time.

Lawyers as Advocates
-Was this interesting? Was I there? Maybe I passed out this morning. Weird that I cannot remember any of these.

Student Lunch Panel: Life in and outside the classroom
-Free food, and students talking to you instead of the Faculty. Once I know who it is that will be sitting on the panel, I can tell you if you should listen to them or not.

Optional Computer Training
-Hell no. This is for the people who don't know where the on button is. You can find all this info on the website.

Alumni Trivia Night
-This was fun, but it was packed. Hard to get food and beer, and hard to hear the questions once they started. Also, I would try and get someone who went to Duke undergrad on your team.

Friday, August 21:
Legal Analysis, Research and Writing classes
-Again, yes. You will have an assignment due, so you need to go at least to turn it in.

Optional Computer Training
-Same exact thing as before.

New Student Welcome Reception
-No, but you should go. The faculty are there, and you can meet them before you start all your other classes on Monday.

Hope that helps!
