The greatest concentration of 1L firm jobs is apparently in Birmingham, Alabama. The 4rth highest is in Seoul. Interesting indeed.

Birmingham can at least be partially explained by the fact that it seems like every firm there does 1L OGI (and a fair number of UVA students are from AL).

The 1Ls at Chicago I talked to made it seem like they had all their apps out on, or shortly after, Dec 1.

Well, quite a few people here put out apps right after Dec. 1. But most people who did haven't locked up jobs by then, and OGI has to wait until late January so that they can have your grades when they show up anyway. Firms do care about grades, and this year more than most.

OGI =/= NALP deadline. OGI is the interview process that takes place after firms have your grades. There is no way that any school did 1L OGI in December because no students had even taken their exams yet. The firms would have been flying blind. The Dec. 1st deadline is simply the NALP deadline. After December 1st, firms can communicate with the 1Ls.

What you actually do is of little importance for your future prospects, there's not a job that will significantly boost your chances of a 2L gig or permanent employment. Firm jobs can pay truckloads of money, and so are obviously attractive for that reason, but as you can tell from the chart the competition is over a tiny handful of jobs. Most people who get them head back to a tiny home market, from what it seems.

I was curious about this. I bet I could get a firm job after 1L in my hometown which is a mid-sized city/secondary market. Aside from monetary considerations, this would be of no significant boost when seeking 2L/permanent employment (assuming I don't want to work for the same firm or in the same market)? Firms during 2L OGI view all legal 1L work equally?

Definitely no boost.

Things that matter at 2L OGI, in a very rough order of importance:

1. First year grades
2. First year grades
3. Diversity
4. Prior substantive work experience
5. Personality / charm / charisma / sex appeal / frequency of drool / firmness of handshake
6. Ties to the firm's market (If non NYC / non DC ('I went to UVA law' is good enough, from what I hear))
7. 1L summer job
8. Elective you took as a 1L

Ideally you get something interesting to talk about from your 1L gig, but it just doesn't open doors. I'm just a 1L, but my pretty extensive research suggests 1L summer gig doesn't matter. See, e.g. the person I know heading to Williams & Connolly [probably the most selective firm realistically available to UVA students] was an RA first year.

When people talk about summers, they mean the summer after that year. 1L summer comes after 1L; 2L summer comes after 2L. He's referring to someone that landed an RA gig the summer after their 1L year.

Everything I'm hearing is that ITE it helps a hell of a lot to have ties to the place you're bidding. So, most likely yes.
