Low-key, but fun. It was nice to be able to speak with so many alums. Lots of Berkeley folks here in DC doing good work. The woman who hosted has had a very impressive career, as has her husband.Shaggier1 wrote:

What is the $966.00/semester Health Insurance Fee all about? Does that mean we're covered under the University plan or something? No extra shopping around is needed?
I'm annoyed that I never noticed that books ($1,500/year) are not counted in with "living expenses", as they are at the other schools I'm looking at. Boalt is expen$ive!

Not only is the SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan) easy to get, it is required unless you have other proof of insurance that is as comprehensive as the SHIP. (e.g., if you can stay on your parent's plan, etc.)black celebration wrote:What is the $966.00/semester Health Insurance Fee all about? Pretty sure books are included in the COA. If not, you can petition to have them added by FINAID. Same if you're looking to get a new laptop for 1L year (though I remember some pretty specific restrictions re: laptops. Talk with FINAID about it if you're going to want to bump up your student budget)

Thanks for the info! Have you been happy with SHIP?Rotor wrote:Not only is the SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan) easy to get, it is required unless you have other proof of insurance that is as comprehensive as the SHIP. And you're right that books are included in the total money allotted by FinAid. I merely meant that the Boalt website lists books separately from "Cost of Living Per Semester", so when I thought it would be about $20,500 it's more like $22,000. Oh well!

Bump - any reactions to SHIPP?
Also, this is a lame question, but how long after confirming a spot do we get Berkeley e-mail addresses?

I know I commented on the fee, but I'm on a waiver so I'm not able to comment about the program. Just a reminder: we're in the home stretch for finals so it may be a while before we get to answers.

Re: Berkeley Class of 2013
The fact that our "Class of 2013" thread is still only six pages at this point (which is in stark contrast to those of our "peer" schools) confirms what I already suspected -- that we're simply much cooler people.

We are much, much cooler. And our thread is over a year old. So there.
Where are people headed to UCB from? I grew up in the Bay Area but have been away for a while.. And who's perusing the forums to spy on their classmates without actually posting? (Guilty. Until now.)

I'm originally from the southeast, but I now live in San Francisco. So stoked that my entire move will take less than one full day.PalacioBarolo wrote:Where are people headed to UCB from? Where are you folks hoping to live? My lady and I do *not* want to live in Berkeley proper, so we're going to start investigating some of the neighborhoods in Oakland which tend to have some nicer sections...Rockridge, Lake Merritt, Temescal, Piedmont, etc.
Also, where are our damn bumper stickers?!

We'll be in Orinda... already have our house and move in just a couple weeks. It's a 3000 mile move for us - so excited!

Tough break on the terrible distances involved in your move Tangerine. Actually, surprised the East Bay managed to lure you at all considering you live in a place so cool they call it THE City.
I was going to stay with friends and find a place in August. Am I crazy? Gymboree you've got me worried. Though I suppose uber preparedness is what drew me to law school..
Bumper stickers?? What? When? How?

Worried because I'm moving out there so early? Am I too uber-prepared? Don't worry, I'm only there to enjoy the shopping and the fine weather. It's not like I'll be reading hornbooks in the law library for July 4th. Hmmmm.... but now that I mention it....PalacioBarolo wrote:Gymboree you've got me worried. I know nothing of bumper stickers -- I'm just assuming that they must exist somewhere!PalacioBarolo wrote:Tough break on the terrible distances involved in your move Tangerine. Palacio, you may want to come out a little earlier than August to find a place. I imagine it could take a good week to find an apartment...and then you still have to furnish. School starts mid-August, right? I would just be worried about still moving in and getting everything situated while class was ongoing. I want to be 100% moved in with EVERYTHING I need by the day one.
Ah yes, it will be sad to leave The City, but I can always come back during 2L or 3L. And I'm verrrrrry excited about being able to afford a 1 or perhaps 2-bedroom apartment instead of just a closet-sized studio!

Let's all agree right now to not touch law-related books until August 16th or whenever that first Monday is.

I would love to be part of the pact, but I was thinking I should probably read The Legal Research Survival Manual (2002) (you know, the one by the Berkeley prof and librarian) considering I only took one legal studies class in school... Would you shun me for this one breach?

I have it and have ::shudder:: touched it already (yet haven't actually read it). It's very, very small. I encourage the group to overlook this one.PalacioBarolo wrote:I would love to be part of the pact, but I was thinking I should probably read The Legal Research Survival Manual (2002) (you know, the one by the Berkeley prof and librarian) considering I only took one legal studies class in school...
