Out of curiosity...I'm a fan or non-apartment living, so I was wondering how you found those little bungalows....just driving around? I'm sure some of them could be cute to decorate.
...I actually meant to PM that to her, but what the hoo. I'll open it to the floor.
(I have obviously been stuck at my parents all weekend looking at housing).
soonergirl wrote: I also saw quite a few houses in Hyde Park that have over-garage apartments or little bungalows in back that the homeowners rent out at pretty good rates. Those would be perfect for a single.

I sent you a PM, but to sum it up, I found out about the apts because my husband and I are looking (okay, trying/hoping) to buy, and a lot of the houses-for-sale listings in Hyde Park mention that the property includes a detached apartment or bungalow.

would commuting from downtown be advisable? i kind of like the semi-urban atmosphere there, but if it meant dealing with significant traffic every morning and afternoon, i'll pass.

Where downtown? You would be parking on campus? When I interned at the Capitol the traffic wasn't that bad.f0bolous wrote:would commuting from downtown be advisable? i kind of like the semi-urban atmosphere there, but if it meant dealing with significant traffic every morning and afternoon, i'll pass.

Re: Texas 2013
Going away from downtown in the mornings shouldn't be that bad heading North. If you didn't have a direct show and had to travel east or west you might run into some problems but nothing too bad. I recently had someone tell me the center of Austin business is no longer downtown, its more in the Far West/Allendale area. Not sure the truth of that statement though.f0bolous wrote:would commuting from downtown be advisable? i kind of like the semi-urban atmosphere there, but if it meant dealing with significant traffic every morning and afternoon, i'll pass.

Re: Texas 2013
Traffic in the morning won't be bad, although it depends on what time and where you are actually leaving from. Traffic in the afternoon from campus back to downtown won't be bad either if you take something like San Jacinto back. PM me about this if you need more info, I can give you some specifics if you need it.f0bolous wrote:would commuting from downtown be advisable? i kind of like the semi-urban atmosphere there, but if it meant dealing with significant traffic every morning and afternoon, i'll pass.

I love everyone in this thread so much. You folks already familiar with Austin are so willing to help the rest of us. I seriously can't wait to be in class with y'all.

absolutely. some of these other threads have some awfully, well, prick-ish elements to them, but you guys seem fun. I really wish I could head down for an ASD or an OMV to meet some people, but I can't really afford to miss anymore work.adrib wrote:I love everyone in this thread so much. Duke, 94% sure (I bought a shirt and looked like tool walking around campus with it on today). Still waiting for Cornell's scholarship offer to try to convince UT to give me more money.kittenmittons wrote:Where are you going to school bro?Jericwithers wrote:Don't worry, the only prick-ish element here (me) probably won't be staying in Texas, lolsoonergirl wrote:absolutely. some of these other threads have some awfully, well, prick-ish elements to them, but you guys seem fun. so you're at UT for undergrad? How much would it take for them to get you to stay? I take it your residency is still out of state...Jericwithers wrote: Duke, 94% sure (I bought a shirt and looked like tool walking around campus with it on today). No, I have in state. Texan all my life; for the rest of my life. I have been asking that question a lot of what will it take to stay at Texas and I don't really know the answer. All I know is that they probably won't give me enough, so the point is moot. They don't seem to give any preference for UT undergrads or state residents when considering scholarships, and while deep down I would love to be a Longhorn 'double-dipper' I just don't think I could put a price on going to Duke and then coming back to Texas. The UT@UT event was quite boring in my opinion, but it is definitely a result of a self-fullfiling prophecy on my part. I have been excited about Duke since getting PT invite, and UT hasn't done anything above and beyond for me to win me over. Maybe they take for granted that I will want to stay here, but without a serious scholarship offer they are not the best deal for me.soonergirl wrote:so you're at UT for undergrad? As somebody who already has two degrees from the same school (and really, who wouldn't want two degrees from such a venerable institution as my alma?), I'd encourage you to go somewhere else for grad school. You can always come back to Austin if your heart and soul are there.Jericwithers wrote:No, I have in state. Texan all my life; for the rest of my life. Thanks. I would settle for Houston if not Austin. Tough luck having to compete with me for employment once when you realize that Texas is the Bestassoonergirl wrote:As somebody who already has two degrees from the same school (and really, who wouldn't want two degrees from such a venerable institution as my alma?), I'd encourage you to go somewhere else for grad school. Hah. While you only combine charm and good looks, I add my refined intelligence and wit to the combination to score the perfect trifecta. I also will be a member of the Texas Exes, so that gives me a leg up come networking and recruiting.soonergirl wrote:as if! Re: Texas 2013
that was a joke, btw. I don't have any exes in Texas. Although to be fair, the guy that took me to my first prom lives in San Antonio, but I don't think he really counts as an ex. I remember he called me up and said, "soonergirl, I've already asked four girls and they all turned me down, and I know we're just friends and all, but do you think you would go to prom with me?" wow. A real charmer, that one.soonergirl wrote:well ALL my exes live in Texas.Jericwithers wrote: I also will be a member of the Texas Exes, so that gives me a leg up come networking and recruiting.
