Oh -on another note I began to look into an off-site storage system which will allow me to share documents and files between my desktop, phone, and laptop. I was all set on a cloud system like Sugar-Sync until I found out I could buy a system that hooks up to my router for roughly the same price ($170 one time price v. $50 annual subscription fee) that will give me a terrabyte of data compared to 30 g. Only downside is if I have spotty internet...

What is the router-connected system called? I'm interested.

Regarding Windows based laptops, I saw the chart just the other day about laptop failure rates. I can't find it at the moment, but I recall seeing HP towards the top in failure rates. Between just those two you mentioned, I would go with Toshiba if for no other reason than to avoid HP.

Asus best, HP worst for failure rates. Toshiba does really well apparently. Also note the failure rate between netbooks and laptops, as well as cheapo laptops vs premium laptops. Keep in mind of course that this survey was done by Square Trade, which sells aftermarket warranties, so the figures may be questionable as to their overall percentages. Apparently they surveyed 30,000 customers or laptops. Something like that. Either way, however they found their results, there still remains a significant difference between HP and Asus.

Interesting survey though I agree with the comment suggesting it is likely skewed. They only researched their own customers. As given by the example, it doesn't make sense that someone would spent $1.5k on an MBP and then buy a third party warranty instead of AppleCare. Although this means there were likely more Asus to research than Apples it theoretically means the Apple data is potentially incorrect while the Asus data is likely correct.

Toshiba might be the way to go... If only I can find a cheaper one!

Speaking of laptops, is anyone going to go for multiple monitors? I've heard this really helps in terms of being able to look at multiple things at the same time. I am not a huge computer person but can see how this would help. Anyone have an advice on particular monitors (I have a MacBook Pro) or if having multiple monitors is even useful?

I currently have a desktop but only had a laptop through college and used an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse set. I had a Mac as well and just got a simple USB hub so I only had one thing to plug in. I know there are docking stations for PCs and assume there are for Macs as well. You simply place your computer in the doc and everything comes up.

Useful for having two things up at once (i.e. WestLaw and a paper) without switching between the two programs or sharing a small screen. Also nice to simply have a bigger screen.

there was another thread sometime back on TLS discussing the idea of dual monitors and the consensus seemed to be that it was pretty useful. i ended up purchasing a second monitor for my desktop (the same model, size, etc. so it can match up perfectly) and i've found it to be incredibly awesome already.

Important to note where you plan on spending the majority of your time. A second monitor is a great idea if you plan on being at home at your desk to study. If you plan to spend it in bed, at the library, or at a coffee shop then why front the expense for something that will rarely be used?

I think I will be spending most of my time at the library, but I am not sure. I will probably see how things are going the first week or two and then make the decision on the monitors.

There is actually a discount computer store in Austin where you can pick up a wireless monitor/keyboard for around $20 (compared to $60+). I know they have some other good deals on monitors but I haven't seen what exactly.

Q: If an illegal alien dies in the United States but is reborn as a zombie, should they be considered a citizen?

I propose the following constitutional amendment:

AMENDMENT XXVIII

Section I
All persons and/or zombies born, reborn, unborn, revived, or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person or zombie of life, undeath, liberty, brains, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person, zombie, necromancer, or holy half-dead within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Section II
You keep what you kill.

Section III
The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

That way we can be sure to retain our constitutional rights after the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Who's with me?

Sounds good to me! I mean it even has the necessary ambiguous section 2. Generations later our descendants will be arguing about what "you keep what you kill" really means. What does it mean to "keep" something? Should they go with the letter of the law or the spirit of the law?
