I just emailed the lady that sent me the lease - she was pretty quick and nice about giving me some info on the room. Not suggesting that everyone start emailing her and asking, but it's an option.doinmybest wrote:

Another first floor kid here. I'm A11-1. How do I tell which side that's on/what I have a view of?doinmybest wrote:

The bottom floor of A Block is a little bit weird. A11 is a double, I think, and most doubles in blocks like A have common rooms which face the quad and bedrooms which face the street. So you should get a little bit of both.tangential886 wrote:Another first floor kid here. I'm A11-1. How do I tell which side that's on/what I have a view of?doinmybest wrote:

True story. Thankfully there's no LC during summer start and everyone I'm living with is a 1L, so I won't have anything to miss out on!

A little weird? And on my lease, it lists the room type as single. Is that just talking about the bedroom itself and I'm in a double?e_ticket wrote:The bottom floor of A Block is a little bit weird. It sounds like you have a single, then. They'd tell you if you had a double, or a single suite (two separate singles connected by a common bathroom)tangential886 wrote:A little weird? I'm actually not really jealous. I cook too much to not have a kitchen, and though I would love to eat Big Ten Burrito and Earthen Jar and Amer's everyday my 1L year, it would not be kind to my pocketbook or figure. I'll just have to find a fellow 1L to share my loft with come fall.

Well, that was probably all kinds of grammatically incorrect. How long have you been living in Nara? I've been there a couple of times, though last time a deer tried to eat part of my sweater
Also, my lease says I'm on the 3rd floor of the LC. Are bathrooms on the 2nd floor?
Also, on a thread related note, I am kind of jealous I'm not in the LC. I can't wait to move into my apartment though! Is anyone interested in a BBQ during orientation week? Apparently my apartment has a nice backyard, that will be useful for all of 2 months of the school year haha.

Re: Michigan Class of 2013
I am a Michigan student who has just finished my 1L year. I'm staying up late tonight working on (of all things) a law journal application. I'm volunteering to answer any questions about what the first year is like at Michigan in particular.
I posted in the main Class of 2013 forum, too -- but couldn't delete it. Sorry for the redundancy. This is where I meant to post.

Good luck on the journal application, Geat! Thanks for answering questions.
There seems to be some scuttlebutt in another thread about OCI being a bloodbath at Michigan this past year. Does this square with what you're seen, heard, read?

My apologies! By double, I meant two singles connected by a common room (maybe suite is the appropriate term). The reason I think that is because most room assignments don't have the "-1" attached to the room number. I had a single last year, and most singles just have a letter and a number (e.g. D12, E16). I always assumed that the "-1" and the "-2" meant that you had one of the two rooms in suite A11.
I only say A block is weird in that, as far as I know, it is has an unusual setup on the first floor. I haven't been in all of the blocks, but A might be the only South U. block with a first-floor suite.
A block may have an unusual set up, but it is definitely the most convenient block on the quad. If last year was any indication, the LC likes to fill it up with cool girls. For your sake, I hope the trend continues

Yes. I wasn't there, and this is all just anecdotal, but every 2L I've talked with about it said it was very hard. I know a few good students who got no offers. A lot of 2Ls are working in non-firm jobs this summer because of it.tamlyric wrote: There seems to be some scuttlebutt in another thread about OCI being a bloodbath at Michigan this past year. This year: it's probably going to be better than last year, but still really tough. No one actually knows how it will be, but that is the most frequently heard prediction.
Note: It seems like the 2008 OCI was even worse. Not only were offers hard to get, but a lot of people who worked as associates that summer didn't get job offers when the summer ended. That happened to a 3L who tutored me last semester -- like most of the tutors working for Student Affairs, he was one of the best students at Michigan in terms of grades. He got 2 offers, and after finishing work as a summer associate, didn't get a job offer.

I'm not sure if things stay the same year to year, but this past year J was a girls block. Size-wise, J is a mansion. J is one of the biggest blocks, and since it houses so many people, I can't guarantee 100% cool girls.

As far as location, J is in the northeast corner. It is the farthest block from classes and the closest to the South U. bars. I think it is also directly above the water heater that services the whole LC, so you don't have to wait long for the showers to heat up. Bonus!
