going to the ASW...not sure what to wear.

if you're in, then i suppose it really doesnt matter. i went to the first ASD at UCLA, and most people just wore shorts/jeans and a polo or shirt. there was this one guy wearing a suit, but i suppose go with your own personal style.

that's helpful...thanks. my concern was i'd end up being the only one who didn't think to wear a 3p suit or its equivalent. I like casual...probably going to leave the punk pins and patches at home though

in addition to the fact that my ass wasnt valuable enough to land on the weyburn confirmed housing list, im also thinking about saving some cash haha. weyburn is about 12.5K/year, and my friend who currently is an undergrad pays around $800 for a comparable apartment, which is also located a block or two closer to the law school.

buttt i really do want to live near a bunch of 1Ls, and i feel like i would make a lot more non-UCLA law friends living with her than if i lived with other UCLA 1Ls. decisions decisions...

I would be cautious about where you decide to live in Westwood if not in Weyburn. Most of the apartments north of Wilshire to the west of campus are filled with undergrads (ah the memories), and they get pretty rowdy thursday-saturday, with some random tuesdays thrown in. I think the noise would be a problem for grad students.

So I emailed and asked about Weyburn permits and they confirmed that they're $237/quarter (even though the law school runs on semesters). I guess that means it's $237 x3 for the school year, plus another $237 if you want it in the summer. That's my understanding, anyway.

I know someone who lives in Weyburn now, and she says it's worth it to get the permit if you intend to bring a car. Apparently there is some street parking available (with no permit), but it's hell trying to get it and your car will get ravaged out there.

Does anyone know how well the random roommate assignments work in Weyburn? I read that they just pair you based on sleeping, move-in, smoking, cleaning preferences, so you could be placed with any other grad student at UCLA. Anyone know someone with personal experience?

Whoa, when did you submit your housing app? I assumed the assignments wouldn't come at least until after the deadline... I submitted mine a few days ago.

What kind of apt did you get? Did you get a roommate?

I actually submitted it a few weeks ago because I thought that was what you had to do get on the guaranteed housing!

I got a two room unfurnished apartment, which was my second choice, so I'm assuming there are some people who got their assignments even sooner.

No word on the roommate. My building is 945 Weyburn, which is "Palm" court or terrace. Looks close to parking!

I put in August 1, but for some reason my contract says July 1 and apparently you can't change the date until you submit the initial payment.

did you send in your seat deposit already? I submittted a housing app but I don't knwo what happened to it - the page in the end didn't have any of the info I entered...i.e. wasn't sure if I ended up submitting a blank app . did ou get a email confirmation or an info at all? I paid $30 for it too....thanks!

I'm guaranteed Weyburn and all that, and I was actually told that I would have an offer between May 11 and Aug 15 depending on my move in request date. An offer so early seems, well, early.

I spoke with someone at the IT department at UCLA and they told me the law school is windows based, but it is still possible to have a mac and partition your hard drive. Any thoughts? Experiences?

I've been using a Sony VGN-Z540 for the past year and absolutely love it. It is rather pricey but it's compact, light, and fast. If you don't mind paying a bit extra for a laptop, I would definitely recommend a Sony. Hope that helps a bit.

I had a Sony SZ450n/c and I think it is pretty much the same thing but an older model. I would hope the newer ones are better constructed because mine has literally fallen apart since buying it back in 2007. It wasn't a cheap computer, $1500, and it still runs good without any real performance issues. However, the construction seemed real cheap. I opted for the carbon fiber version for less weight (and look and baller-ism), and it was seriously light, but the computer felt like hot-glued plastic. It would creak and crack when I picked it up, and the sides started to come off the body (I admit that it sometimes experienced sudden drops while in my backpack's padded laptop compartment). My main complaint is the hinges on the screen are so lose now that they screen wobble about 10degrees when you type on it. The customer service was nice though, they fixed some of the construction problems 1 year after buying it, but it still suffers from inferior construction quality in my opinion. It lasted nearly 3 years, so I guess that is standard for a computer. It wasn't the software/hardware that made it become outdated but the construction quality.

I have since gotten a macbook pro and I love it. Mac is actually a very nice operating system despite all the jokes I have given mac users, but I do find issues like on a PC and some compatibility problems but not as much as I thought I would. I just like the construction of it, it feels real sturdy and with the protection accessories you can get made specifically for a mac I can't forsee any problems like I had with my Sony. Installing windows on the mac is very easy as well, and it works like a charm without a single issue yet. However, I got mine for a steal and after owning one I really wouldn't recommend spending $1500 on a computer after experiencing that with my sony. Buying two $600 computers over the same lifetime would be a better deal. I recommend HP, as Dell is moving toward the business market and away from direct consumers (their customer service is also starting to reflect this mindset). I would say HP or a Sony if you want a PC (depending on if you can find a good one for a reasonable price), but a mac if you can find a good deal on one.

Thanks a lot! Great post. One question though... did you partition your hard drive? If so, how much space did you allocate towards windows??
