Apologize for not going to reception?
I interviewed with a firm recently (just a screening interview) and they invited me to a reception with the other interviewees and last years summers that night. I was unable to go because I had a prior commitment. They only interviewed about 10 -12 people, so there wouldn't be that many people at the reception and they would probably notice that I wasn't there. Do you think I should send an email thanking them for the interview and explaining why I didn't show up for the reception, or is it not a big deal?

I think it would be good manners to send an email... no harm can come of it, only good
