Let's talk drug testing

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Aug 15, 2009 11:17 pm

From what I've heard, private firms seldom if ever drug test their employees (including summer student hires) whereas govt. positions almost always do. Can someone with experience applying for jobs and going through OCI etc. comment on this?

Also, do they give you the drug test when you are interviewing in the Fall, or is it when you start working in the Summer? Any experiences with whether hair vs. urine tests are more common?

Urine tests seem to be more common. From what I've seen, for summer interns the testing takes place between the time of offer and start of summer.

So assuming you need a month or two to clean your system out, we should probably quit smoking pot by about September or October to be on the safe side? Bummer. I was hoping to be able to push it to Christmas break.

Most of the partners are doing blow off Vietnamese hookers in their offices so I doubt they're going to care if you toke up once in a while. That said, if you're in your mid-20s it's probably time to drop the bong maaaannnn.

Its funny... Some of us lawyers actually take the oath to uphold defend and further the laws and constitutions of our state and country fairly seriously... even the annoying ones like drug laws.. You might take thirty seconds to think about the fact that you are going to be an officer of the court and it might be time to start respecting the law, instead of figuring out ways to skate around it...

Just a thought...

I think he's a paralegal who used to be a badboy. Anyway, I can respect the fact that he doesn't want anyone to get screwed over, someone who has or has not cleaned up their act and can give advice based on experience is still a wise soul in my book.

I might be an asshat, but honestly.. at a certain point, its time to grow up and stop getting high at every possible turn to the point where you are worried about it hurting your chances at getting a job... One point at which to do that might be when you are becoming a fucking lawyer... Not all lawyers run around sniffing coke off hookers asses and ripping bongs.. The majority don't...

Well, I mean....OP didn't say he was getting high all the time....so that's rather presumptious

I don't generally think that trying to gain employment by not failing a drug test is skating around the law. I think it's mostly just trying to get a job...

I am four years clean and sober myself and I echo the concern that if you're worried about drugs affecting your employment, there might be something wrong... So I would like to very gently suggest the OP consider attending an AA meeting... Just to listen.... There are open meetings available for anyone to attend, you don't have to believe you have a problem.

PS the reason I suggested AA rather than Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, or Marijuana Anonymous is that there are tons more AA meetings and it's the same program... A huge percentage of the ppl in the groups I attend have dual addictions...just Google AA and the count where you live for a meeting schedule Anyway... The post was a red flag to me and I just couldn't NOT say something. Thanks for listening...

I don't think the Anonymous feature was created so one could namelessly add insight such as "oh ok. so he is an asshat.".

I am a paralegal at a large NYC office of a big firm and we do not drug test here or at any of our offices (in the US or abroad). I have friends who are paralegals in the Manhattan DA's office and they've said that they were tested once, after they were offered the job, and that as far as they know, there were only subsequent tests if someone's behavior warranted suspicion.
