Is passing your application off to a friend always the move?
Current judicial clerk applying for 2027 positions. I know that most law firms have a designated "apply here" portal--if I have a friend at the firm, would it just make more sense to send my materials to them so they can pass them on to the hiring team at the firm? Or is that looked upon negatively?

They serve different functions. Your friend is the referral source; the portal starts your application in their system and puts your materials in the right place for HR.
Your friend will tell HR that they have a potential referral, HR will email you asking you to start an application on the portal, and away you go.
