DA to Biglaw

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jan 06, 2025 8:42 pm

I have 10-12 years of experience as an ADA/DDA/ASSA in one of Manhattan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston DA’s offices. Before that, I attended T-10 school, clerked at an A3 district court, and worked at a V-20 law firm (litigation, no WC).

I have to be a little broad with my stats to not out myself, but that’s the gist.

What are my chances at:

1. USAO in same district as I work?
2. USAO in major metropolitan district that is not the city in which I work?
3. SDCA (I’ve heard they like DAs)?
4. SDNY (I know, probably not, but is it worth even applying?)

I know people who have made the jump from ADA to AUSA in EDNY, but not SDNY. The ADAs who got hired at EDNY usually went to T14s, often clerked (many for MJs), and some had a biglaw past. Obviously, things may very well change depending on who the US Attorney is. But that being said SDNY has historically hired from a very well worn path of SDNY clerkship + v20 litigation associate.

To the former ADAs who went to EDNY, were they all from Manhattan DA?

Nope. Probably a slight plurality were from DANY, but there were also a solid amount from the Brooklyn DA's office too, and I heard of a recent hire there from the Bronx DA as well.
