NYU Tax LLM as another door to tax?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Nov 08, 2024 3:22 pm

I worked at a Big4 Accounting firm and have an offer to return, but I've always wanted to work for a big law firm in the corporate space. I didn't do so well in law school and my school is ranked in the mid 20s. I have another offer to work for a big law firm, but it's a non-traditional ediscovery role. My goal is to do corporate Big Law long-term. I'm considering an LLM in Tax for another shot at big law, but I'm in need of genuine advice. Any and all advice is welcome. How should I proceed? What are my chances of getting into big law with the tax llm? What if I go Big4? Is it easier to lateral? How do I get to Big law corporate asap?

It is not easy to lateral to Biglaw from a Big 4 accounting firm.

Yes, you may get a second shot at Biglaw if you do very well in the NYU Tax LLM program, but the odds are well less than 50% based on the info. shared in your post.

A significant number of NYU Tax LLM students are already in Biglaw and plan to return to their Biglaw firm upon completion of the LLM degree; this affects the impressive Biglaw placement numbers for NYU's tax LLM program in a concealed fashion.

You are probably more likely to get a Biglaw interview from Big 4 tax or from NYU LLM tax program then from non-traditional Biglaw e-discovery.

Don't get a tax LLM if what you really want to do is corporate. Even if you want to do biglaw tax, I'd caution that most of the people who get biglaw offers out of NYU had the credentials for biglaw right out of the gate (or are working as a biglaw tax associate while in the program).

I wouldn't take an e-discovery gig unless you want to check out in a boring dead-end role. It's certainly not a great way into a biglaw partner-track corporate role.

Big 4 can be a good entree into a tax career, but I wouldn't count on Biglaw as your exit. Most exits from Big4 would be to industry. It helps to have an accounting background too (though not essential).
