NYC WLB?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Sep 13, 2024 9:04 am

I'm a securities/capital markets midlevel in a secondary city at a well known firm considering a relocation to NYC. My main motivation behind relocating is not professional, but to experience a new city and the culture/fun of living in a world capital. I've connected a lot with New York the times I've visited and think I'd enjoy living there for a couple years, but am a little put off by the posts I've read on here of the intense work lifestyle of NYC biglaw. I bill about ~1800 at my current gig and still feel like I work a decent amount, and the thought of billing 300-500 more hours/year than I currently do seems a little overwhelming, especially if I'm making the move to enjoy the city. I don't need a strict 9-5, but I'm curious if anyone has any stories/recommendations about practicing in NYC while still maintaining some semblance of a life outside of work.

I'd focus more on the big west coast cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco/Bay Area, San Diego, etc. It's a different vibe than NYC and other large east coast metros but you'll likely have a better chance of some wlb on the west coast.
