S&C vs DPW vs PW vs Quinn (NYC lit)

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jul 16, 2024 11:00 am

Very fortunate to have offers from all 4, despite coming from outside T14. Pretty set on lit, especially white collar defense or antitrust, but want to try some regulatory work as well.

Would like to get substantive litigation experience as early as I can, but having some semblance of work-life balance (by big law standards at least) and pleasant office culture is obviously important for me too.

Long term goals include AUSA and partnership, hopefully.

Congrats on four great offers! For strength in white collar and good ASUA ties, Davis Polk would be your best bet. Good connections to AUSA at Paul Weiss, as well, and they have a pretty strong antitrust group. Sullivan & Cromwell's lit focus is more on general commercial but they are obviously a great firm overall. Honestly don't know much about Quinn's NY office in particular. But they are of course a great firm for litigation overall and from what I hear from friends in other non-NY Quinn offices, I think associates get more early substantive experience there than at the big white shoe firms. My friends at Quinn seem happy enough but Quinn catches a lot of strays on this board for being a tough place to work and being asshole opposing counsel. So they probably aren't the first port of call for a "pleasant" office culture.

WLB won't be great any of these places, but if you can narrow it down to the final two, ask for second looks at those firms and try to probe the associates about what their lives really look like.

I was in a similar position to you and picked DPW. My 2nd pick would have been PW and my third would have been S&C.

They are all strong firms. Quinn gets a bad rep and sends less people to USAOs as compared to the other 3 firms, so if AUSA is your goal, I'd avoid.

DPW really stood out for being a collegial firm with a strong white collar practice -- both on the pro bono and client sides -- with excellent partners from the USAOs who consistently feed associates to federal prosecutor positions. PW & SullCrom have more "yellers" and aren't as pleasant places to work. I'd go with Davis.
