Chicago Lateral

Post by BowlingGreen » Sat Aug 19, 2023 9:04 am

Currently a 5th year M&A associate at an NYC V20 where I summered at. No issues with my current firm and am well regarded (albeit a little burnt out at this point), but my wife got a job opportunity in Chicago that we both agreed she could not turn down, so we'll be moving out there. I have no ties to Chicago (other than soon to be living there) and went to a regional NYC law school. Would you expect a lateral into Chicago big law to be difficult?

Also, would love to hear about any differences between the Chicago/NYC lifestyle - of course I would expect to be working hard in Chicago, but is it really tangibly better than NYC?

Chicago Corporate/M&A market is still hiring at a hot pace despite recession fears. Based off your reason for moving and experience, I would think it would not be that hard to get a job to be honest. With that said, you are going to work similar hours to New York.
Edit - though a lower COL for the same pay will make you very happy. Also apartments/condos are much bigger in Chicago so you'll probably feel like a King while still having access to most of the same amenities and attractions you would have in New York. So in other words, hopefully it's a good move you enjoy and really should not be that hard to find a new job.

If you are at a V20, should be able to lateral pretty easily. I have had friends lateral in Chicago in the past year more senior than you and they had to drop a bit in the AMLaw ranking firm but still big law and it seemed pretty quick turnaround.

As previous poster said, you will probably work close to the same. Not sure about your current firm, but it seems like a lot of NYC firms want you in the office when you are working. Chicago firms are not like that. Even firms that have instituted in-office requirements tend to be empty after 5:30 pm. And obviously your money will go a lot farther.
