URM OCI Advice

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jun 19, 2023 8:17 am

I’m a rising urm 2L at a T14. I’m looking to do litigation in biglaw and I have legal intern experience at both a V20 law firm and FedGov. Unfortunately had a bad first semester but a good second semester and I’m sitting just above median in terms of gpa. I’d like to apply to OCI to firms like DPW, Debevoise, Paul Weiss, and Skadden (all nyc).

So I have a few questions. Is litigation at these firms totally gone with this gpa? Is being a urm a boost during pre-OCI applications or OCI? Im interested in white collar work, but is saying those going to harm my chances because it’s more competitive or would my ability to talk substantively about it maybe dismiss some concerns?

All those firms are 100% doable with URM and slightly above median. And yes, URM is a boost during OCI. You are right that being pure white collar will make you less competitive so the standard response should be I am leaning litigation, but am open to corporate work and would like to try some during my SA.

Just to follow up on this. Similar situation. Rising 2L URM at a lower T14. Rough first semester but a good second semester, so now I'm slightly above median. Got callbacks at DPW and STB in NYC, got a soft rejection at Skadden NYC. Definitely possible. Also received an offer and a callback from two DC litigation firms. Network a bunch and don't count yourself out.

Word of advice. Don't lean too heavily into the URM thing. It does help but you will strike out if you're a bad interviewer or seem uninterested in the law (which is what happened to me). But, if you can make a convincing showing that you're actually motivated and interested in the work, you'll do OK
